WASHINGTON— In response to the publication of an investigative report into César Chávez and the allegations of his sexual violence against women and girls, GreenLatinos released the following statement:
“GreenLatinos is devastated by the reports of the horrible actions of a man once revered as a historic labor leader and icon in the Latino/a/e community.
Any individual capable of the reprehensible actions outlined in the report must be held accountable – no matter their position of power or history of leadership. In this moment, we honor the survivors and their families whose allegations were dismissed or who suffered in silence for decades in order to protect the reputation of a man and a movement. Their brave voices have been heard.
To all the survivors – our thoughts, support, and energy are with you. We stand with you and take this opportunity to recommit to our work supporting the farmworker community who toil in dangerous conditions, including extended exposure to extreme heat and deadly pesticides, while women farmworkers also continue to suffer from disturbingly high rates of sexual assault.
