Campeones en el Congreso y comunidades logran un progreso histórico en la Justicia Ambiental para Todos
Washington – On Wednesday, March 25, 2026 Congresswomen Summer Lee (PA-12), Adelita Grijalva (AZ-7), and Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) launched the People’s Environmental Justice Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. This Caucus formed just months ahead of the 35th anniversary of the First National People of Color Environmental Leadership Summit, a landmark event integrating the principles of justice, respect, health, self-determination, civic engagement, workplace safety, international law, Tribal sovereignty, medical consent, freedom, education, and reciprocity into the American environmental movement. The People’s Environmental Justice Caucus will champion the legacies of the late Congressmen Raúl Grijalva (AZ) and A. Donald McEachin (VA) who drafted and passed out of committee the House of Representatives’ broadly supported landmark Environmental Justice For All Act.
In response GreenLatinos Founding President and CEO, Mark Magaña, emite el siguiente comunicado:
“For decades, people exposed to the deadly consequences of industrial pollution and exploitation of our land, water, and air successfully unified time and time again for a safer, healthier planet for our children. The establishment of the People’s Environmental Justice Caucus is a historic milestone that will center equal access to environmental health through community leadership. The creation of this body is ever more critical given the relentless attacks on the health, environment and safety of our communities. GreenLatinos celebrates the heroes who worked to make this happen. We thank:
Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District for uplifting the urgent needs of working class families and farm workers, reminding us that climate justice is labor justice;
Congresswoman Summer Lee of Pennsylvania’s 12th District for highlighting the critical needs of our communities following the inhumane cuts from the federal government to environmental protections from NEPA to the Clean Air and Water Act;
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan’s 12th Congressional District for reminding us of the important work of the late Raúl Grijalva to bring everyone's voices to the table in important decision making including the most polluted zip code in Michigan; and
Our compadres at We ACT for Environmental Justice, Climate Justice Alliance, Environmental Justice Leadership Forum, Platform for a Just Climate, and innumerable others for honorably representing millions of people who call the U.S. home by ensuring that those who live on the frontlines of environmental catastrophe are heard by Congress members nationwide.
Our movement holds an exciting and promising future. We the People of the United States can and will hold climate polluters accountable. Together we will deliver environmental protections for families, low-income communities, communities of color, and everyone at the frontlines of polluting industry’s failures. Our ability to live with thriving ecosystems is a matter of America’s founding ideals of freedom and justice for all–no exceptions.”
