Deep-Sea Mining Order Prioritizes Wealthy Corporations Over People

This new policy will destroy fragile marine ecosystems for those near coastlines.

WASHINGTON-Today, the White House announced the signing of a destructive and extractive Executive Order that will have devastating consequences for marine ecosystems and those who enjoy these majestic oceanic sanctuaries.

Following the signing of this Executive Order, GreenLatinos Water Equity & Ocean Program Director, Dr. Val Z. Schüll, released the following statement:

“Today’s White House Executive Order to boost deep-sea mining is a disastrous move that will harm marine ecosystems, small-scale fishermen, and coastal communities.

This new policy squarely prioritizes the private gain of wealthy corporations over the people living in or around our coasts. It continues this Administration’s agenda to put our oceans at risk for monetary gain.

GreenLatinos and our members denounce this terrible decision and are working with communities on the ground to fight back against this order. We will continue highlighting the importance of keeping our comunidad safe from the continued attacks on our oceans and freshwater ecosystems.”
