This decision squares directly against a UN-adopted fundamental right to clean, safe water
WASHINGTON — On Friday, September 4th, a federal appeals court ruled that the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee the right to clean drinking water, dismissing the plea from thousands of directly impacted frontline black and brown communities who’ve long suffered from lead-contaminated water. This comes after Trump’s EPA considers further narrowing the Clean Water Act and its provisions preventing pollution in wetlands through regulation and a thorough permitting process.
Following the news of these disastrous updates, GreenLatinos Water & Ocean Director, Dr. Val Z. Schüll, released the following statement:
“Access to clean water is a universally recognized human right. Our communities depend on streams and wetlands for our well-being and livelihoods. Polluters should not get more leniency to harm habitats, protected species, and human health. This consideration of rolling back protections to our water, alongside this ruling, demonstrates the need for us to continue the fight for every community to have access to clean, safe, and affordable drinking water.”
