The longtime Tucson Congressman exemplified the passion, resilience, and commitment required to fight and win our environmental and climate justice battles.
WASHINGTON — Yesterday, March 13, 2025, the Office of Rep. Raúl Grijalva announced the congressman passed due to complications in his treatment for lung cancer at the age of 77.
Following this tragic news, GreenLatinos Founding President and CEO, Mark Magaña, released the following statement:
“Congressman Raúl Grijalva was a progressive champion who fought admirably for the causes he believed in. He made his legacy by fighting for clean air, clean water, and the conservation of our public lands, spending a decade serving as Ranking Member and Chair of the House Natural Resource Committee from 2015 to 2025.
The Chairman spent years bringing together environmental justice leaders, traveling to environmental sacrifice zones, and soliciting extensive public input to create and pass through committee the groundbreaking Environmental Justice for All Act, the most comprehensive environmental justice legislation in history.
As a committed GreenLatinos supporter, he dedicated countless hours to our cause, joining us for in-person and virtual Encuentros, events like our annual GreenLatinos Summit, and the GreenLatinos Live! Awards Celebration, where we honored his historic life and work with our Living Legacy Award. Throughout his career, he took exceptional pride in advocating for Latino/a/e and other historically underserved communities. His resilience led him to fight until the very last day, and his work will live on through GreenLatinos.
On behalf of the GreenLatinos Board and Staff, we offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends, staff, and global admirers in this difficult moment.
