GreenLatinos Mourns the Passing of Dolores Huerta

This larger-than-life figure leaves an iconic legacy of power and resilience that embodies GreenLatinos ideals and values.

WASHINGTON — On Wednesday, October 28th, family members announced the tragic passing of civil rights icon Dolores Huerta.

In reaction to this tragic news, GreenLatinos Founding President & CEO, Mark Magaña, releases the following statement:

“GreenLatinos mourns the loss of a pillar in our community. For decades, Dolores Huerta has embodied what it means to stand up for your values and your comunidad. From a farmworker who breathed in and fought back against the deadly petrochemicals sprayed on agricultural fields to becoming a pivotal figure in the fight for farmworker rights, she experienced injustice firsthand and knew why we stood up against it. We are inspired by her immense contribution to our movimento and our society.

In the next few weeks, we will host the 2026 GreenLatinos National Summit in Tucson, Arizona. In 2024, GreenLatinos awarded Dolores Huerta the GreenLatinos Liberacion Award for her lifelong commitment to standing alongside us in our fight for environmental and climate justice. At our 2026 GreenLatinos Summit, we planned to highlight this award and her amazing work. We will facilitate a fitting remembrance memorial in her honor, led by her good friend and EarthJustice Senior Legislative Representative Laura Esquivel.

This news is still shaking us. It’s a tremendous blow for our community. Dolores was a one-of-a-kind superhero whose sacrifices have created a new generation of leaders and advocates. We all stand on her shoulders. May she rest in power.” – Mark Magaña, GreenLatinos Founding President & CEO.
