Earth Day 2021: Luchando por la Liberación Ambiental (Fighting for Environmental Liberation)

Washington, D.C. —  For GreenLatinos, and hundreds of activists and partners across the nation, this Earth Day/Día de la Tierra 2021, is focused on a renewed fight for environmental liberation (liberación ambiental). We envision a healthy and equitable society where communities of color are liberated from disproportionate environmental burdens, free to breathe fresh air, drink pure water, access clean transportation, and enjoy our majestic public lands, ocean, and waters.

Mark Magaña, founding President & CEO of GreenLatinos, released the following statement regarding Earth Day/Día de la Tierra 2021:

“The urgent need for major action on climate change and environmental justice can only be achieved if we address the racial justice and social equity work necessary to grow an inclusive and equitable movement and successfully meet the challenge of this moment,” said Founding President & CEO of GreenLatinos Mark Magaña.

While the Biden administration has shown early signs of moving in the right direction, GreenLatinos are calling for:

• A commitment to a stronger nationally determined contribution (NDC), so that the U.S. is doing its fair share to combat climate change.

• Reinvigorated leadership on the world stage through the president’s Leaders Summit on Climate. We are pleased that the White House plans to give new funding to help poorer nations adapt to climate change and transition to clean energy.

• Protections for public land, like the Castner Range National Monument, expected to be introduced today by Rep. Veronica Escobar (TX), that recognizes a 21st Century conservation effort centered around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
