Protect Lakewood from Toxic Chemicals!
Terumo BCT is a medical manufacturing and sterilization facility that has operated in Lakewood for more than 20 years. In 2022, the company faced lawsuits from community members who say living near the facility and exposure to toxic chemical emissions like ethylene oxide.
Ethylene Oxide is a chemical used to sterilize heat-sensitive medical equipment like catheters and anesthesia masks. It is also used to make antifreeze and detergents and to disinfect spices and tobacco products.
Exposure to Ethylene Oxide can increase the risk of blood cancers like Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and lymphocytic leukemia. It can also irritate the eyes, skin, nose, and throat. Exposure can also increase the risk of miscarriage. Children are at more risk because ethylene oxide can cause damage to DNA,
In 2022, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment conducted a study that found a small increase in certain types of cancers linked to ethylene oxide exposure. Terumo has submitted permits to install new emissions controls.
We urge the Colorado Air Pollution Control Division to ensure that the company:
- Will install the best available technologies.
- Verify emissions reductions.
- Share this improvement with Community members.
