Background:

Senate Joint Resolution 8/ House Joint Resolution 4

House Representatives Ferrary, Sedillo-Lopez, and Senator Pinto are sponsoring a joint resolution in both the House and Senate proposing an amendment to the New Mexico State Constitution protecting the rights of the people of New Mexico to have clean and healthy air, water, and soil. A safe climate and thriving ecosystem is the birthright of all our state’s residents.

This Constitutional amendment would be voted on by the people of New Mexico and would protect these rights equitably for all people regardless of race, ethnicity, tribal affiliation, gender, socioeconomics, or geography.

“Everyone has rights stated in the Declaration of Independence: ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ These basic rights are infringed upon when the very air we breathe, water we drink, and soil we grow our food in are tainted for profit. The people of New Mexico deserve to have protections guaranteeing that the environment they live and raise their children in is healthy and sustainable.” - Carlos Matutes, GreenLatinos New Mexico Community Advocate, Albuquerque
