To support our mission we are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our finance team based out of our headquarters in Reston, VA (due to COVID-19 all NWF employees are working remotely until further notice). This position is an integral member of the Unrestricted Revenue and Treasury team, reporting to the Manager of Accounting. This individual is primarily responsible for recording, reporting and reconciling daily and monthly banking activity and monthly investment activity. This position also works closely with staff in other departments as well as with external vendors in order to contribute towards timely and accurate financial reporting for the National Wildlife Federation (NWF).


Principal Duties (major areas of responsibility):


  • Perform cash and banking functions including but not limited to: daily download and importing of bank activity, processing wire transfers, recording incoming cash receipts, and reconciling all assigned bank accounts and credit card statements.
  • Record, research and notify other departments of all incoming payments for donations/contributions, bequests, and grants received via ACH, check and/or credit card.
  • Monthly reconciliation of third-party cash reports to NWF bank statements (including Catalog, Membership and Publications).
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and fiscal year end analysis for long-term investments in accordance with financial policies; prepare accurate and timely reconciliations for assigned general ledger accounts; and prepare audit schedules for areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare journal entry uploads and analysis to ensure the accurate recording of transactions for cash and investments, revenue recognition, and other treasury functions.
  • Setup, monitor and reconcile third party merchant events transactions.
  • Update procedures as needed and proactively recommend process improvements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet team objectives.


Minimum Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Strong knowledge of GAAP, applicable laws, codes, and regulations, and audit practices and principles.
  • 5 years of relevant work experience, including bank and investment reconciliations, ideally in the not for profit industry.


Minimum Skills:


  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel
  • Proven accounting analytical skills with ability to produce accurate results
  • Knowledge or capability to learn Infor CloudSuite ERP Financial System
  • Knowledge of Merchant Services such as Square, PayPal, AMEX, Paymentech and Shopify
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, specifically regarding accounting concepts
  • Must be detail oriented, reliable, and adhere to accounting ethics
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with limited direction
  • Can prioritize multiple or competing tasks to meet critical deadlines

Compensation and Benefits:


Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $70,000-$75,000
