National Forest Foundation (NFF) is pleased to offer a regular, full-time, and non-exempt position that will provide administrative support to the Southern California Program, supporting community engagement and implementation of forest restoration, watershed restoration, and recreation improvements across the four Southern California National Forests: Angeles, Cleveland, Los Padres, and San Bernardino National Forests.


About the NFF: The NFF works with communities and organizations to conserve and enhance the watersheds, wildlife habitat, wild places, and recreational opportunities across our 193-million-acre National Forest System. The NFF seeks to engage all Americans in this work.


Position Function: The Southern California Program Associate reports to the Southern California Program Senior Manager. The Associate will provide administrative support to the Southern California Program by developing and implementing various database and budget tracking mechanisms, coordinating meeting and event logistics, supporting communications, providing project management assistance, and other necessary administrative duties. The Associate will also support administration and coordination of Southern California collaborative and partnership efforts. This work requires close coordination with NFF staff, the U.S. Forest Service, community organizations, and implementation partners to accomplish identified goals and activities across NFF’s Southern California Program.


Position Duties and Responsibilities: The Southern California Program Associate is responsible for the following duties:


Project Support:

  • Working closely with the NFF and U.S. Forest Service staff to support project planning and administration, including procurement, contracting, and grant-making processes.
  • Organizing and tracking requirements and timelines associated with various contracts and agreements, including funding agreements, service contracts, and federal agreements.
  • Helping manage and track program and project-based budgets.
  • Support preparation of grant reports.
  • Ensuring that various NFF databases (Customer Relationship Management and Grants Management System) are regularly updated with Southern California Program entries.
  • Organizing logistics, scheduling, and assisting with implementation of various meetings, phone calls, and events.
  • Providing technology and data management support for various program-related documents and files.
  • Supporting Southern California Program staff with project management needs, such as procurement and purchasing needs, and project management tracking systems.
  • Assisting the Southern California Program Senior Manager with other administration-related tasks as needed.

Community Engagement:

  • Support administration and coordination of Southern California collaborative and partnership efforts, including email communications, assisting with meeting logistics and note taking, and maintaining group documents and history.
  • Support planning and implementation of events, including partner meetings and volunteer days.


  • Manage the Southern California Program content calendar and track  communications deadlines.
  • Work with NFF staff to communicate project needs and accomplishments, including writing blogs and social media posts and ensuring the Southern California Program team contributes to communications efforts on a regular basis.
  • Work with Southern California Program staff to maintain and update Southern California Program webpages.

Education and Qualifications: NFF expects the Associate to possess the following educational and experiential qualifications:

  • A minimum of two (2) years’ experience with proven results helping administer projects, programs, or similar business or nonprofit operations.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and administrative skills.
  • A willingness to build working knowledge in local natural resource issues, quickly.

Abilities and Skills: NFF expects the Associate to possess the following proven abilities and skills:

  • Ability to work independently, performing administrative tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Ability   to   collaboratively   accomplish short-term tasks and support long-term projects and programs.
  • Ability to effectively manage a variety of projects and tasks to successful completion.
  • Excellent analytical skills with a strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to represent the NFF with diverse constituents in a clear and professional manner through excellent written and oral communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working effectively in collaborative efforts with individuals or groups that have conflicting views of resource management preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work on diverse teams or with a diverse range of people.
  • Ability and willingness to learn NFF’s processes and procedures quickly.
  • Ability to work well and be flexible in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license and a clean driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally throughout Southern California as required by position duties.

Location: The position location is flexible, but a community near a Southern California National Forest is preferred. Applicants must be able to travel regularly to Southern California National Forests. This position is a remote/work from home position and requires reliable internet access.


Compensation:  The NFF offers competitive compensation commensurate with candidate skills, experience, and location. Total rewards at NFF, beyond salary, include generous paid time off, employer contributions to health savings accounts, matching funds for retirement, and more. NFF has recently (August 2022) implemented a new compensation program with grade levels as part of our commitment to transparency. The salary range for this position will be in the $47,250 to $61,375 range. Please note that the indicated salary range describes the full range for an incumbent in this position. Most new staff generally start at the beginning of the range percentile to ensure internal salary equity.
