About the job
TO APPLY: https://phf.tbe.taleo.net/phf01/ats/careers/v2/viewRequisition?org=SIERRACLUB&cws=39&rid=1965
Context: At the Sierra Club, we believe in the power of togetherness. Together, we remain committed to the fight for a healthy climate built on a foundation of environmental, racial, economic, and gender justice – a future where all people benefit from a healthy, thriving planet and a direct connection to nature. As the climate crisis and deeply entrenched systemic racism all fuel inequity, we will continue to fight for a bold, transformational agenda that recognizes the interconnectedness between our planet, our humanity, and our democracy. By recognizing that our destinies are tied, we continue to name that all things are fundamentally connected, and the overlap between ecology, race, gender, and representative government will move to either advance our collective humanity or to oppress it.
Sierra Club is comprised of staff across the country and a network of local chapters that support our grassroots engagement. We are also proud to be a unionized employer, with two labor unions representing more than half of our employees.
Scope: The Sierra Club’s Fossil-Free Finance Campaign builds on the Sierra Club’s years of advocacy to push Wall Street firms and the financial sector to align their policies and practices with a safe climate future and respect for human rights. By continuing to direct money into fossil fuels, underwrite dangerous projects, and misuse shareholder power, financial institutions are exacerbating the crisis, delaying the transition to a clean energy economy, and hurting the Indigenous peoples and local communities that are often on the frontlines of polluting, extractive industries. Without major intervention from a movement of activists, customers, investors, business leaders, policymakers and regulators, the financial industry will continue with business-as-usual, fueling the fossil fuel industry’s expansion and pushing the climate toward calamitous tipping points. The Sierra Club -- in partnership with many local, national and international organizations -- is working to build that movement to take on Wall Street’s role in the climate crisis.
The goal of the Sierra Club’s Fossil-Free Finance Campaign is to stop investments in fossil fuels by pressuring banks, insurers, and asset managers to withdraw financing from this sector. This campaign is an important component of the Sierra Club’s work to combat the climate crisis, the goal of which is to secure a safe future for us all by hastening an equitable transition off of all fossil fuels, including coal, oil, and gas.
