The Aspen Institute Energy and Environment Program (EEP) is looking for a Senior Communications Manager to take EEP to the next level by developing and executing strategic communications initiatives across our program areas and equipping staff at all levels to be effective communicators. The Senior Communications Manager will be able to manage communications strategy across the program and independently create content.  This is a new role on a growing team – so there is a lot of room to run and create new things.

In collaboration with EEP staff and partners, the Senior Communications Manager will develop a strategy and lead a variety of efforts to amplify our work and engage in public dialogue—all with the goal of building and sustaining urgency for systems change in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Strategies include digital communications efforts, media placement, editorial product development, publication launches, event promotion, communications channels for our own network of program partners, participants and funders, and creative ideas we haven’t yet considered. About half of your time will be spent on a broad array of energy and environment program work and the other half will be focused specifically on the marine shipping decarbonization project.


Note on location: Our headquarters is in Washington, D.C.  This position can be remote until the end of 2021 (although our offices are open for anyone who chooses to use them), open to negotiation of location after that.



  • Strategy   Work with program teams to develop and implement a program communication strategy, including creating a scope and objectives to build awareness and support for the initiative among a wide variety of stakeholders.  Provide thought leadership to help program teams frame issues and communicate more effectively.
  • Narrative and Writing – Work with program teams to translate a variety of research and other material into clear, compelling content such as blogs, fact sheets, newsletters, press releases, and speeches.   Manage and oversee branding identity, messaging, and narrative for programs, and oversee final production, publication, and promotion of content.
  • Press / Earned Media  – Manages relationships with press, including pitching stories and producing press releases, sometimes in collaboration with Aspen Institute communications team or outside partners.
  • Social Media  –  Oversee social media accounts and online engagement.  Work with program teams to create social content and track and evaluate metrics of success and adapt strategies to grow and improve outreach over time.


  • 6-10 years of professional experience, with at least a few in the climate change topic area;
  • You are regularly told you are a very good writer;
  • You are also told you are creative and frequently come up with new, innovative ideas;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, energy, and initiative;
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational abilities, and time management skills, especially under pressure;
  • A “Yes, and” problem solver attitude;
  • Lateral management experience;
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time (post-COVID).
