Right-of-way (ROW) acoustic Technician

Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, seeks a Right-of-way (ROW) Technician to join BCI’s Science Team.

The ROW Technician will join a dynamic organization and a highly progressive team of conservation scientists, reporting to the Conservation Research Coordinator. The ROW Technician will work with a second technician to conduct fieldwork for a project aimed at determining whether experimental plots of native prairie plant communities targeted to increase insect pollinators also increase nocturnal insect prey for white-nose syndrome-impacted bats at a utility right-of-way site in Illinois.

The ROW Technician must be comfortable working independently and as part a team, be able to work safely in the field, have the ability to troubleshoot equipment and problem solve, submit accurate data in a timely manner, and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders and partners.

We are hiring 1 technician to complete work at 1 field site in Madison county, Illinois. The technician will work approximately 15-20 hours a month from June through early November 2023. The anticipated start date is June 19, 2023. The hourly rate for this position is $13.

Position Description:

Travel to field location to:

  • Set up and maintain bat acoustic monitoring devicesChange batteries
    Change memory cards
    Trouble shoot malfunctioning equipment
  • Collect insects using sweep nets and sticky cards
  • Manage data related to project activitiesDownload and upload data from memory cards to an external hard drive or remote website
    Store and ship insect samples in a timely manner

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

Required Knowledge/Experience

  • Have or be working towards a Bachelor of Science in biology, ecology, natural sciences, or a related field
  • Ability to follow written protocols and comfort to ask questions and clarify instructions
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of staff, government agencies, industry, landowners, and other partners
  • Personal transportation and ability to travel to research site. Mileage will be reimbursed based on the federal rate; mileage may be capped depending on distance from home to field site
  • Ability to walk moderate distances while carrying 5-15 lbs of equipment
  • Availability in evenings, early mornings, and weekends

Preferred Knowledge/Experience

  • Experience conducting fieldwork with bats, including acoustic monitoring
  • Experience working outdoors in seasonal conditions

  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and high motivation
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptive to changing protocols and when encountering problems that may arise with equipment and/or site conditions
  • Willingness to work in harsh weather (rain, heat, etc.)
  • Interest in working with a remote team and interacting over video conference platforms
