The Regulatory Director, Education + Innovation will provide policy support to our regional teams, educational opportunities both internally and externally, and thought leadership on regulatory reform. This role will report to the Managing Director, Regulatory Advocacy Hub (“Hub”). The Regulatory Director, Education + Innovation will (1) develop and deploy regulatory training materials and events, (2) maintain and grow Vote Solar’s policy and regulatory expertise, and (3) provide support for regulatory interventions of regional Vote Solar staff. In their first year, this role will (1) develop the curriculum outline and plan for development of education materials for Vote Solar staff, (2) start to develop training materials, and (3) work in at least one state in collaboration with regional staff on a direct regulatory intervention.
The Regulatory Director, Education + Innovation’s primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Develop and Deploy Regulatory Training Materials (50%)
- Develop curriculum for understanding regulatory issues, for both Vote Solar staff and external constituencies
- Develop regulatory training materials across multiple media (e.g., written, video, audio)
- Provide trainings to Vote Solar staff on an as-needed basis
- Be an internal Vote Solar resource to explain regulatory issues to staff (as needed)
- Provide trainings to allies on regulatory issues in order to increase their effectiveness at state public utility commissions
- Provide educational opportunities to state officials (e.g., presentations at the National Associations of Regulatory Utility Commissioners conferences)
- Share resources (e.g., work products) and regulatory developments with allies – individuals and partner organizations – across the nation
Regulatory Reform Thought Leadership & Policy Expertise (20%)
- Maintain and grow Vote Solar’s policy and regulatory expertise on regulatory reform
- Share lessons learned across regions and amplify best practices
- Meet regularly with regional regulatory staff to surface resource and strategy concerns
- In all work, exemplify our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
- Anticipate and prepare for future policy developments, with a particular focus on regulatory reform
- Know the landscape of national, regional, and state partners and their regulatory agendas in order to foresee trends, developments, and any potential issues
Provide Support for Regulatory Interventions (20%)
- Co-intervene with Vote Solar regulatory staff to provide coaching and guidance to staff, act as an expert witness, provide analyses, and/or support public-facing campaign tactics for regulatory intervention in the states, especially in regard to regulatory reform
- Elevate successes from the states, especially through the identification of trends across the country or aggregation of the impacts of regulatory interventions, through reports, blogs, etc.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (10%)
- Continue personal learning and contributions to organizational work on diversity, equity and inclusion
- Work to embed equity in all organizational internal practices and culture, as well as our programs
- Bring openness and engagement to personal, professional, and organization-wide learning on race, class, gender, justice, and equity
WHAT YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field. A relevant graduate degree is an advantage, but is not required
- 7++ years of relevant work experience
- Demonstrated ability to convey complex information to non-technical audiences
- Experience in technical and regulatory advocacy, especially around regulatory innovation and reform
- Experience executing on Vote Solar’s key strategies to achieve our mission, including coalition building and policy writing that summarizes complex issues for the interested public.
OTHER THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OR WOULD BE EXCITED TO LEARN HERE
- Experience in technical and regulatory advocacy for distributed energy resources
- Experience with fundraising or other non-profit development experience
- A personal commitment to being a part of an inclusive and just workplace, including a commitment to being on a journey with Vote Solar to develop personal, and inter-personal core competencies related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice
- Passion for building strong new capacity at a growing organization
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Remote, within the United States
This is a remote position, with a preference for candidates based near a transportation hub. This position will require some national travel, upwards of 1x per month, depending on the need or project. Workplace arrangements are flexible, including options to work from a co-working space or work from home.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The salary range for this position is $120,600 - $126,500. At Vote Solar, we work hard to ensure that our compensation is equitable internally and aligned with our compensation philosophy and defined job levels. In order to ensure equitable compensation across roles in the organization, we do not negotiate new hire offers.
Vote Solar provides full-time staff with a competitive package, including 4 weeks of paid vacation, 12 days of sick leave, 4 days of personal leave and 16 paid holidays. We also offer 100% employer-provided health, dental and vision care for both the employee and dependents; a retirement savings plan with an employer contribution of 3.5%; and a paid parental and medical leave policy for all regular employees.
