The RCM is a new position created to provide direct support to our regional teams. This role will report to the new Senior Director of Communications as part of the Communication team, which also includes a Managing Director and Digital Director. In addition to writing and publishing a variety of communications content to support regional policy and regulatory campaign initiatives, the RCM will own the coordination and implementation of multichannel communications strategies. In their first year, this role will prioritize becoming an expert in our digital tools and gaining a deep understanding of our campaign priorities and how best to communicate them to our key audiences.
The RCM’s primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
COMMUNICATIONS STRATEGY (25%)
- Work with the communications team to identify annual priority campaigns and communications focus.
- Attend regular regional campaign and coalition meetings to identify and provide communications guidance and updates to Vote Solar’s members and our partner organizations.
CONTENT CREATION (40%)
- Help to conceive, draft and implement campaign-related communications assets to ensure consistency, clarity, engagement, and alignment with Vote Solar’s voice. This includes email, social media, press releases, thought leadership/op-eds, blog posts, ads and key messages.
- Center Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ) in content development and storytelling.
- Create visually compelling digital content through excellent writing, photo selection and brand implementation, with a specific focus on member engagement.
DIGITAL ENGAGEMENT (25%)
- Own the social media or email calendar to ensure timely and organized implementation of initiatives across different teams; responsible for planned content and engaging on social media/email.
- Own execution of membership list management strategies in alignment with communications and development goals, including:Assist the Director of Digital Strategy in website development and maintenance.
Maintain a healthy email list by using proper segmentation, tracking metrics, and best list health practices.
Support other departments, such as Access & Equity, and the Development team in their communications needs, including grassroots funding campaigns and uplifting voices from our environmental justice partners.
- Plan and run experiments to test new tools and other innovative channels for engaging new target constituencies.
- Use data, testing and learning to report on and increase the advocacy efficacy of Vote Solar campaigns.

WHAT YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED
- Three to five years of experience in either digital organizing, fundraising, advocacy campaigns or a demonstrated track record that matches this experience.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in advocacy, DEIJ, fundraising, or other issue-driven areas.
- Experience developing and implementing multi-channel communications activities for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in learning and growing skills in digital tools, data management, and analytics.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to plan, organize and prioritize workload and handle several tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to learn and communicate about energy policy and the policymaking process.
- Comfortable working in a remote team setting, with demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and driven.
OTHER THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE ACCOMPLISHED OR WOULD BE EXCITED TO LEARN HERE
- Track record of success with online fundraising programs or other non-profit development experience.
- Ability to translate complex content into creative and compelling people-centric content that makes it impossible to resist clicking through.
- Basic understanding of HTML and how to troubleshoot formatting on Wordpress sites and in WYSIWYG content editors.
- Experience with graphic design for both online and offline content, or video production.
- Familiarity with the rules and restrictions associated with working for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 charitable organizations.
- A personal commitment to being a part of an inclusive and just workplace, including a commitment to being on a journey with Vote Solar to develop personal, and inter-personal core competencies related to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.
- Passion for building strong new capacity at a growing organization.

The salary range for this position is $62,000 - $72,000. Vote Solar provides full-time staff with a competitive package, including 3 weeks of paid vacation in year one and 4 weeks starting in year two, 12 days of sick leave and 4 days of personal leave. We also offer 100% employer-provided health, dental and vision care for both the employee and dependents; a retirement savings plan and an employer match of up to 3.5%; and a paid parental and medical leave policy for full-time staff who have worked for Vote Solar for at least one year.
We are hiring for two people in this role, one based in the Pacific or Mountain time zone, and one based in the Central or Eastern time zone. This position can be remote, but there is a preference for individuals based in one of our regional offices or able to visit regularly: Oakland, California; Denver, Colorado; Chicago, Illinois; Washington, DC; Boston, Massachusetts; New York, New York. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all Vote Solar staff have been working from home and have ceased work travel. When it is safe to do so, this position will require some regional and national travel (plan for a few trips per year).
