Inspired by efforts to increase racial diversity in conservation and clean energy, the Roger Arliner Young (RAY) Diversity Fellowship Program aims to increase and facilitate environmentally-related career pathways for emerging leaders of color. The RAY Fellowship Program is a paid fellowship designed to equip recent college graduates with the tools, experiences, support, and community they need to become leaders in the conservation and clean energy sectors—one that, in our visions of the future, fully represents, includes, and is led by the diverse communities, perspectives, and experiences of the United States.


Sustainable Ocean Alliance is an international organization that inspires, supports and enables young leaders to develop new solutions that address the greatest threats facing the ocean. Through education, mentorship, and access to leadership opportunities we aim to advance the impact of startups, social enterprises, and youth-centered initiatives.

The RAY Fellow- Ocean Leadership Program is responsible for aiding the work primarily of the SOA’s Ocean Leadership Program (OLP) and secondarily the Ocean Solutions Accelerator (OSA). The OLP RAY Fellow has a unique opportunity to work across multiple, high-impact projects, design and implement innovative programs, and provide curated support for our global community of young leaders and entrepreneurs.

The ideal candidate is diligent, mission-driven and passionate about saving our ocean. They must be willing to work in a fast-paced and results-driven setting while maintaining a high level of integrity, empathy, and respect for others. This position will be based remotely(EST preferreddue to time differences). Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States, but not necessarily based there. This is a full-time position.

● Candidates from backgrounds underrepresented in the field of marine conservation are preferred.

● Working-proficiency in a second language is strongly-preferred. Priority languages are: Spanish, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Portuguese & Mandarin Chinese.

● Candidates must have some flexibility to work outside normal office hours due to time zone differences.


General Duties

● Work with the Program Director to plan the delivery of overall program and its activities in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization

● Develop new initiatives to support the creation of Ocean Solutions Hubs around the world

● Assist in the vetting of projects and determining which initiatives should receive SOA grant funding

● Communicate with young leaders, fellows, and partners to gain community support for the program and to solicit input to improve the program

● Support the Youth Policy Advisory Council and Community Manager to engage SOA Global Community in political advocacy and policy related workstreams

● Run point on assisting hubs in organizing regional events and creating language-specific learning modules

● Manage partnerships with international stakeholders, including government officials, fellow NGOs, Universities, and donors

● Design and implement hub capacity-building resources, toolkits and campaigns

● Build a database of fundraising prospects and assist in identifying and qualifying new prospects.

● Prepare and proofread correspondence, briefing memos, charts, tables, graphs, etc.

● Develop engagement and reflection tasks for global hub leaders in learning management and community platforms

● Developing and implementing engagement strategy for the SOA Global Community

● Collating research papers, white papers, and gray literature related to applicable ocean topics and areas of measuring ocean impact for review by policy/science staff.

● Assist in tracking important developments in major ocean and environmental fora.

● Research, analyze, collect, organize, and synthesize information related to high priority ocean technology, science and policy.

● Engage with outside scientists, conservation professionals and policy-makers to advance strategic goals.

● Work closely with OLP & OSA staff and consultants to shape the research questions and analysis for their work.

● Support staff members in the preparation of grant proposals and reports.

● Work independently and as part of a team on special projects, which may include assisting in the planning, coordination, and dissemination of presentations, narrative reports and other written and web-based information to international audiences.


In addition to the responsibilities at the host institution outlined above, RAY Fellows will spend, on average, 2-4 hours per week (5-10% of work time) on the following:

● Actively communicating and building community with their RAY Fellow cohort and previous RAY Fellows.

● Attending monthly check-ins calls (including 1-on-1 check-ins with RAY program staff and group calls with their RAY Fellow cohort).

● Meeting regularly with mentors both inside and outside the host institution.

● Attending monthly professional development webinars, trainings, and other opportunities to build knowledge and skills.

● Developing a Personal Leadership Plan (PLP) in their 2nd year with the support of supervisor(s), mentors, RAY program staff, and their RAY Fellow cohort. The PLP will serve as a tool for self-reflection, planning, and assessing progress towards professional, personal, and leadership goals.

● Preparing and leading an hour-long end-of-fellowship webinar highlighting their Fellowship experience.

RAY Fellows will also attend:

● A 3-day Orientation Retreat in August 2021.

● A 3-day Mid-Fellowship Leadership Retreat in August 2022.

● At least one other training or workshop with their RAY Fellow cohort.


Eligible RAY Fellow applicants will:

● Come from a racial / ethnic background underrepresented in conservation and clean energy and demonstrate a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

● Be no more than 1 year out of college and have a Bachelor's Degree by July 2021 (we are not considering individuals with graduate degrees at this time).

● Have not had a full-time job in conservation or clean energy.

● Have the ability to work in the United States and commit to the entire fellowship.


● A passion for our ocean and an interest in the field of conservation.

● Bachelor’s degree by the time of employment.

● Demonstrated intellect and leadership.

● Creativity, energy, and the ability to multi-task and get work done under pressure.

● Experience with conducting research and analyses.

● Strong verbal and written communication skills.

● Ability and willingness to work as a strong team player, while at the same time able to work independently and as a self-starter.

● Curiosity and a commitment to learn new things.

● Meticulous attention to detail.

● Cross-cultural and/or international experience strongly preferred.

● Eagerness to work both independently and as part of a small, nimble and global team.

● Candidates must have a strong familiarity with Google Drive services & must be comfortable using Google Sheets and/or Excel.

● Familiarity with programming, data modeling, or other technical tools would be an asset.


This is a two-year, full-time fellowship (one year with a one year renewal) starting on or after July 15, 2021.


The Fellowship is compensated and sponsored by Sustainable Ocean Alliance, who offers a competitive benefits package as well as training and professional development opportunities. Base Salary is $60K USD. Health Care, Dental Care, and Vision included.
