Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation has grown into America's largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 52 state/territorial affiliates and nearly seven million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, etc. The mission of the Federation is to unite all Americans to ensure that wildlife thrive in our rapidly changing world. The Federation believes that in order to save wildlife and ourselves, we need to ensure that all Americans have access to clean air and water, safe communities, easy and equitable access to nature, and protection from the ravages of climate change. These basic needs, equally necessary and urgent for all people, are foundational to bringing the conservation movement and ethos into the 21st century.

Launched in 1962, National Wildlife magazine is a benefit of membership in the National Wildlife Federation. Published quarterly, it reaches more than 480,000 people in print and online and covers issues related to wildlife and habitat conservation, connecting people with nature, environmental justice, wildlife gardening and environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, invasive species and habitat fragmentation. Our goal is to educate and inspire people to care about nature and act on its behalf, recognizing that each individual can make a positive difference.

To support our mission, we are seeking a Production Assistant to join our publications team in our headquarters office in Reston, VA (due to COVID-19 all employees are working remotely until we make return to work decisions).

Principal Duties:

We’re seeking a collaborative individual with strong equity competencies to work with a small and dedicated team. This person will help with all aspects of our magazine’s production, including preparing magazine files for release to press, establishing and monitoring production deadlines, preparing articles for online publication, producing the magazine’s web pages and managing website assets such as photographs, videos and online ads. In addition to production responsibilities, clerical duties will include file clean-ups, archiving, reader correspondence, cost tracking, maintaining photographic caption and credit information, assisting with the annual photo contest and helping with social media posts and content.

Opportunity for Growth:

This job offers significant opportunity for a motivated individual to take on new roles and responsibilities with National Wildlife magazine, based on the individual’s skills and interests.

Education or Training:

Bachelor’s degree or at least two years relevant work experience required. Interest in wildlife conservation, publications, science and communications a strong plus.

Skills:

  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools and Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, Premiere and HTML. Experience with content management systems a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and multitask
  • Strong equity competencies and a professional, respectful and collaborative approach to help build an inclusive team

NWF Values:

Your actions are expected to reflect the staff values of the National Wildlife Federation: collaboration, mindfulness, empowerment, inclusivity, and mission focus. Your competencies should include:

  • Being motivated by values of equity and responsibility to those most marginalized;
  • Consistently bringing a high level of empathy and social skills to work and interpersonal interactions;
  • Being committed to deepening an environmental justice approach in policy priorities, program development and partner engagement;
  • Actively seeks feedback, direction, and guidance from all team members and keeps staff informed of decisions that impact them;
  • Being dedicated to advancing NWF’s internal equity transformation and compelling partners and allies to incorporate equity into their work; and
  • Passion for and commitment to NWF's mission

Travel Requirements:

Training and administrative tasks will require regular work at the National Wildlife Federation’s headquarters in Reston, Virginia, so we’re seeking someone in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro area within commuting distance to this location. There may be occasional visits to archival storage facility in West Virginia and to the Federation’s annual meeting (locations vary within the United States).
