Job Title: Organizing Representative
Unit: Grassroots Power Building
Reports To: Organizing Manager

Scope: The Organizing Representative works with community members, volunteers and staff to build and support organized, resilient and powerful communities. The Organizing Representative works with others to build grassroots power, grounded by the Jemez Principles that achieves concrete campaign goals while creating structural and cultural change. Works with community volunteers and Campaign staff to shape campaign goals. The Organizing Representative builds relationships, increases the number of people engaged, supports leadership development and builds just and supportive partnerships. They use existing data tools and processes to enhance organizing work.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Develops organizing strategies and tactics. Begins new work with community mapping to understand the character, needs, and dynamics of the community in which we will organize. Works with community supporters and volunteers to develop an organizing strategy and tactics to build grassroots power through base and community building, leadership development, partnership building and achieving local victories.
a. Utilizes a variety of engagement tactics and tools including in-person meetings as appropriate, virtual meetings, online direct engagement and the use of social media to build relationships and engagement.
b. Practices the Jemez Principles and creates inclusive, equitable spaces and relationships; centers equity, justice and inclusion throughout the organizing work.
c. Provides training and support for volunteer information sharing, learning and leadership development
d. Nurtures existing partnerships and develops new partnerships to further our power building, campaign and movement building goals.
2. Collaborates to build power. Works within an integrated organizing model that combines digital, distributed, field and chapter organizing where possible. Works with or coordinates with campaign, digital, communications, policy/advocacy/legal, advancement and Chapter staff as well as with Chapter and community volunteers as appropriate, playing an active role in a campaign team. Collaboration work will vary in different sites and geographies. Coordinates with campaign team members and volunteers to ensure there is local volunteer and community input to campaign goals. Works with campaign team members and community volunteers and is supported by an organizing manager in the implementation of the organizing strategy and tactics.
3. Uses qualitative and quantitative data to inform the work. Uses data to plan, record and evaluate the power building work (base building, leadership development, partnerships) with a focus on learning and innovation. Utilizes the current movement technology tools determined by the organizing department
4. Builds just, caring relationships. Works to build just, respectful relationships within the organization and with external individuals and entities around our collective work. Works with community volunteers to develop relationships with grasstops leaders including key governmental officials and political leaders. Supports a community of care with colleagues and collaborators and recognizes the need for self care in order to sustain ourselves and our work.
Variance of work: There are times of ebbs and flows with organizing work and during peak activity periods more work will be required. Frequent weekend and/or evening work required and significant travel required -- these should be balanced using compensatory time to slow down.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- Solid experience in grassroots organizing - engaging volunteers, supporting leadership development and building strong partnerships that grow and deploy power to change policies, structures and culture.
- Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to communicate across diverse identities, communities, audiences and mediums.
- Experience using quantitative data (for example, numbers of people engaged) and qualitative data (for instance, stories about people taking action) to inform and evaluate organizing work.
- Experience using a variety of in person and online/virtual tools, for example tools such as Zoom, peer to peer texting and Mobilize, and venues for volunteer outreach and engagement.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
- Experience developing organizing strategy to achieve short term and long term goals.
- Experience working within a team where there is mutual accountability for shared objectives.
- Understanding of environmental, climate, and social justice issues and how they relate to each other.
- Excellent knowledge and background in a specific issue area of the environmental field related to assigned programs and campaigns.
- Experience and knowledge of the legislative process and/or administrative policy-making process.
- Knowledge, background and positive existing relationships within specific communities or related to assigned Sierra Club programs and campaigns.
Depending on location, valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance is required. A background check will be required upon acceptance of the position.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this position is $68,500.
The Sierra Club offers a competitive salary package commensurate with skills and experience plus excellent benefits that include medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a retirement savings 401(k) plan.
This is a category 4 exempt position.
