About the job
Are you passionate about the oceans, scientific research, and data analysis with experience in ocean ecosystems and climate change? Do you want to make a difference protecting and restoring the abundance of the oceans to combat climate change and ensure that coastal communities can thrive? Come join a dedicated team of professionals who are working to protect our oceans.
Founded in 2001, Oceana is the world’s largest nonprofit organization focused solely on restoring the resilience and abundance of the ocean. We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and clear goals. Our campaigns focus on getting policy changes in countries that govern more than one-quarter of the world’s wild-caught fish.
As a key member of the Science & Strategy team, the Fellow helps develop the scientific foundation for our work on ocean protection and climate change, collects and analyzes data, and prepares technical reports, to help achieve Oceana’s mission and drive our Save the Oceans, Feed the World initiative. Our team values diversity in backgrounds and experiences and we strive to build on and complement each other’s skills to create an inclusive and supportive team that together can fulfill a wide range of objectives and responsibilities for the organization.
The ideal candidate has a master’s degree in marine science or a related field and two years’ work experience (or equivalent qualifications) and has experience working and building relationships across different cultures and/or multiple disciplines/backgrounds. The Fellow will provide technical support on fisheries, habitat protection, and climate change, write, edit, and present materials for internal and external audiences, and contribute to the development of metrics for tracking progress in ocean conservation and climate change mitigation and adaptation to support Oceana’s campaign goals.
Oceana values a diverse workforce and welcomes people different from each other in many ways, including characteristics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, and national origin. Oceana considers all qualified candidates and seeks to recruit from a diverse candidate pool.
Note: Oceana requires all employees to provide proof of vaccination against Covid. Accommodation for new hires who have disabilities that make the vaccine medically inadvisable or those who have a sincere religious belief that the vaccine is impermissible may contact humanresources@oceana.org. Accommodation will be provided only as required by applicable law.
Oceana's US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday. Oceana continually evaluates safety protocols and updates our practices on an ongoing basis based on the CDC community level color coding system of green, yellow and red.
