About the job
Bats and One Health Wildlife Crew Lead (NV)
Texas, Nevada, California
Bat Conservation International (BCI), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to ending bat extinctions worldwide, anticipates hiring 3 seasonal Wildlife Crew Leads to join BCI’s Science Team and conduct fieldwork across Texas, Nevada or California for a North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat)-One Health project from May to September 2023. We anticipate to hire one Wildlife Crew Lead per state.
The NABat-One Health project aims to use the North American Bat Monitoring protocol to study the occurrence and distribution of bat populations across the United States and monitor bat population health.
Wildlife Crew Leads are expected to work for extended periods of time, travel long distances on a daily basis and occasionally camp in remote locations. Fieldwork will include traveling across a state deploying acoustic monitoring devices, finding roosts, setting up mist-nets, handling bats to collect samples, and meticulously entering data collected in the field. Crew Leads must be comfortable working safely in the field and supervising a Wildlife Technician. Because fieldwork will occur across a given state, Crew Leads must also be comfortable not having a base throughout the field season. Crew Leads will report to the One Health Project Coordinator and must communicate effectively with partners from government agencies, academic institutions, and non-governmental organizations. Crew Leads will be expected to work approximately 44 hours/week and be compensated $19.00 – $20.00 per hour plus over time. The anticipated start date is May 15th, 2023.

- Walk long distances over uneven terrain.
- Hike with backpacks that weigh 30+ pounds.
- Work nocturnal hours
Ideal Candidate Qualifications:
Required Knowledge/Experience
- Have or be working towards a Bachelor of Science in biology, ecology, natural sciences, or a related field
- Experience conducting fieldwork with bats, including mist-netting and acoustic monitoring

Work Characteristics and Competencies:

- Ability to work with limited supervision
- Comfortable working in harsh weather and at night
- Given fieldwork will involve working directly with bats, Crew Leads will be required to wear N95 masks and gloves when handling bats.
