The Nature Conservancy in Indiana has a long history of protecting some of Indiana’s best natural habitats. At over 8,000 acres, the Efroymson Restoration at Kankakee Sands is among the largest and most diverse grassland restoration in the United States. It is part of a larger bi-state conservation area that exceeds 25,000 acres of prairie, wetlands, and oak savanna. The Kankakee Sands project has many active programs including bison and cattle grazing, prescribed fire, invasive species management, greenhouse and seed processing, and volunteer and community outreach.

 

The Nature Conservancy in Indiana is seeking a Kankakee Sands Land Steward to join a passionate and skilled team of staff that use a variety of conservation strategies and restoration tools to maintain, enhance, and advocate for this diverse landscape. They will become members of our fire, grazing, and daily stewardship programs as well as assist with preserve operations at the Kankakee Sands Macrosite in Morocco, Indiana.

 

The Kankakee Sands Land Steward will assist with all aspects of preserve management, including the development and coordination of preserve management plans, maintaining preserve areas frequented by the visiting public, removing exotic species and/or monitor and participate in research. This person will be the primary stewardship lead for assigned preserve units. The Steward also helps maintain tools, fleet vehicles, and equipment. Lastly, they will assist with our outreach, prescribed fire, and grazing management programs.

 

The ideal candidate will have a related science degree and 1-2 years’ experience (or equivalent combination); background using and maintaining equipment and herbicide safely; and knowledge of local plants and animals and current trends in conservation. They must meet the qualifications needed to participate in prescribed fires; have knowledge of ArcGIS and common software applications; ability to work independently; and be comfortable working and communicating with diverse audiences including, volunteers, visitors, neighbors, and partners.

 

This is a full time, hands-on field-oriented position based at our Kankakee Sands Field Office in Morocco, Indiana. It includes a competitive benefits package and a compensation range that begins at no less than $24.00/hour; negotiable depending on experience.
