EDF offers internships and fellowships for students and recent graduates in a variety of programs and departments throughout the organization. The ultimate goal of our internship and fellowship program is to provide high-quality experiences (including relevant projects and opportunities for networking) that form the foundation for any individual who is serious about pursuing an environmental career.

Program Overview

The Economics team is the nexus of economics at EDF, ensuring that the economic thinking that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available knowledge. To be most effective in this role, the Economics team provides support for other programs throughout EDF and fosters relationships with economists outside the organization.

We are looking for a fellow who can support us in any of the following areas: carbon markets, climate cooperation, climate mitigation policy (including transitions to net-zero emissions, pricing, and methane reduction from fuel production), energy markets, air quality, transport and environment, climate resilience (including coastal and agriculture), and freshwater resources. We are particularly interested in hiring a candidate who is interested in and has the skillset to support carbon markets work for a portion of their time.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities for this position will be based partially on the Fellow's area(s) of focus and how that ties into EDF's economics work. The responsibilities will include but may not be limited to:

Examples include carbon markets, climate cooperation, climate mitigation policy (including transitions to net-zero emissions, pricing, and methane reduction from fuel production), energy markets, air quality, transport and environment, climate resilience (including coastal and agriculture), and freshwater resources.

· Monitor the peer-reviewed literature, and synthesize and disseminate relevant information for EDF economists, scientists, lawyers, and policy specialists.

· Participate in the development or refinement of EDF's policy positions based on the Fellow's research, analysis, and knowledge of peer-reviewed literature.

· Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a combination of the following:

· Hold a recent Ph.D. in economics, or a related area such as public policy, with a strong emphasis on environment or natural resources issues.

· Enthusiasm for applying rigorous economics to advance environmental objectives.

· Enjoy working with multidisciplinary teams that have a shared objective.

· Demonstrate record of research and success in managing and conducting rigorous economic analysis.

· Familiarity with issues relating to market-based climate policy and decarbonization of economies and their well-being implications an asset.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong ability to effectively synthesize and communicate technical concepts in a clear and concise manner to colleagues internally and to external non-technical audiences.
  • A track record of leadership of a collaborative research project.
  • Must be well-organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and to work independently.
  • Demonstrate initiative, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills.
