Job Announcement: Healthy Climate Program Director

Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) seeks an experienced Program Director to lead our Healthy Climate Program team.

Guided by the values and expertise of healthcare and public health, Oregon PSR works to protect human life from the gravest threats to health and survival by striving to protect our climate, end the nuclear threat, promote peace, and advance justice. Oregon PSR is committed to creating a culture of equity and justice in our organization and in the world. Our work for climate justice involves bringing a health perspective to campaigns for a just transition to a healthy energy system.

Position Summary: The Healthy Climate Program Director will work closely with staff and volunteers to bring the voice of healthcare and public health to campaigns for climate and energy justice.

Supervision: The Healthy Climate Program will report to the Executive Director and work as part of a collaborative team with other staff and volunteers.

Location: The position is based in Oregon, and most work will be remote until public health guidance warrants resuming in-person work. Then it will entail some travel, mostly in Oregon and SW Washington for rallies, hearings, meetings, and outreach events. The position may be based out of our Portland office, housed in an office in another part of the state, or from a home-based office in Oregon.

Hours: Primarily weekdays with some weekend and evening work required.

Compensation: This is a full time, 40-hour a week, exempt position with generous benefits including one month paid vacation, health, dental, complementary and alternative healthcare, flex time, sick time, and retirement match. Salary range: $55,000-$65,000, depending on experience.

Major Responsibilities: The Healthy Climate Program Director  is responsible for managing all aspects of Oregon PSR’s Healthy Climate Program. Duties will include:

  • Developing and implementing program objectives, strategic plans, work plans, and timelines for the Healthy Climate Program
  • Tracking and evaluating program outcomes for reporting and planning
  • Supervising, mentoring, and supporting the work of the Climate Justice Organizer, Clean Air Organizer, and occasional interns
  • Working with the Executive Director to grow and develop foundation and individual funding sources for the program and supporting organizational fundraising efforts
  • Engaging and organizing members of the health community across the state through Oregon PSR’s Healthy Climate Action Team of volunteers by coordinating trainings and providing opportunities for health professional activism for climate justice
  • Collaborating with coalition partners working on issues including a just transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, access to clean water, forest health, climate resilience, ending nuclear power, and addressing mass incarceration as a public health issue
  • Participating in organization-wide Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (JEDI) efforts and incorporating JEDI values into program work and goal
  • Advocating for Oregon PSR priorities with elected officials at the local, state, and national level
  • Researching, writing, and distributing information about climate, energy, and health justice through social media, our website, email alerts, our newsletter, and other means
  • Representing Oregon PSR at events, including speaking at public hearings, community forums, and outreach activities

Required Qualifications: A strong candidate for this position will have:

  • A minimum of three years experience with community organizing, political organizing, campaign direction, and/or engaging with policy makers
  • At least one year of experience supervising staff
  • A commitment to organizing through a social and racial justice lens
  • Ability to articulate the importance of a health voice for climate justice
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently and with a team, including within coalitions
  • A high level of organization and comfort with a fast-paced environment
  • Experience with garnering news media, producing social media, and digital organizing

Desired Qualifications:

  • Background in health, science, or public policy
  • Proficiency in Spanish or another language

*A note to potential candidates: Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every single one of the qualifications as described in a job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and we are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job. That candidate may be one who comes from a background less traditional to our field of work, and that’s welcome. We would strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of the qualifications described.

Application Instructions:  Send a résumé, cover letter, and three references as a single PDF document to kelly@oregonpsr.org with the subject line “Healthy Climate Program Director Position” to apply. Review of applications begins September 1st. The position will remain open until filled. No phone calls please.

Oregon PSR is committed to justice, diversity, equity and inclusion. We strongly encourage Black, Indigenous, and people of color, all genders, sexualities, ethnicities, and abilities to apply.
