The Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Opportunity
HCWH has been engaged in a comprehensive DEIB assessment process, which has included establishing a foundation of shared understanding and commitment throughout the organization and embedding DEIB principles and values into our current organization-wide strategic planning process. Now, we are seeking a Head of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (Head of DEIB) to drive efforts to further incorporate DEIB values into all aspects of our culture and practice. The Head of DEIB will collaborate with leaders and staff to operationalize HCWH’s commitment to being a diverse, antiracist, equitable, and inclusive organization, including identifying how HCWH will center DEIB in the implementation of its 2024-2026 strategic plan. They will be responsible for developing and communicating an overarching vision and strategy for DEIB that works to eliminate systemic organizational marginalization and promotes inclusive and antiracist practices. Partnering with leadership throughout the organization, the Head of DEIB will guide implementation of this vision and strategy, ensuring that HCWH lives into its DEIB principles and values within its structures, customs, policies and practices, and leadership.
The Head of DEIB reports to the Executive Director. They will work closely with and serve as an integral part of the senior leadership team; lead HCWH’s DEIB team; and collaborate with department and program leaders, the Board, and external partners. Through the work they lead, they will ensure that all staff, at all levels of the organization, have a universal experience of equity, inclusion, and belonging, and are able to steward these values in HCWH’s external-facing work.
Key Responsibilities: The Head of DEIB will provide leadership across the breadth of HCWH, influencing both its internal and external-facing work, including the areas of focus outlined below. Recognizing that any one individual will bring varying levels of experience but is not likely to bring expertise in all of these areas, HCWH is seeking a leader who is skilled in organizing and leveraging appropriate internal and external resources that may be necessary to fulfill the organization’s needs.
• Partner with HCWH’s senior leaders, management team, and DEIB team on the integration of DEIB with all organizational change efforts, identifying key goals for organizational culture, internal and external practice, and DEIB metrics.
• Develop, manage, and advance HCWH’s racial equity roadmap and other initiatives that foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
• Lead ongoing internal assessments to identify and overcome barriers to achieving standards of excellence for DEIB, including designing and implementing metrics, monitoring, and reporting systems to effectively benchmark organizational progress.
• Serve as the lead for the DEIB team, working in partnership with this group on internal learning programs, work plan guidance, and overall organizational implementation of DEIB priorities.
• Develop and deliver training programs and materials for staff on antiracism and implicit bias, leveraging external resources as needed to supplement the Head of DEIB’s own expertise.
• Facilitate or coordinate interpersonal coaching, establishing spaces to work through conflict.
• Lead and participate in internal communications and feedback mechanisms to ensure consistency in identify, discussing, and addressing DEIB issues.
• Manage resources, deliverables, timelines, and budgets related to DEIB efforts.
Functional Area Guidance
• Work closely with the People and Culture team to design and implement strategies for recruiting and retaining leaders of the global majority, and other diverse backgrounds, across all positions. Participate in the development of organizational leadership competencies, supervisory training, and succession planning.
• Consult with program and operational teams to determine needs for DEIB-related resources needed to support their internal and external objectives.
• Advise the Operations team to weave DEIB into daily operations (e.g. recruiting process, procurement policy, IT accessibility)
• Partner with the Development team to explore opportunities to work with diverse, equitable, and inclusive funders; participate in raising funds to support DEIB initiatives.
• Collaborate with the Communications team on DEIB editorial guidelines and inclusive messaging.
• Lead strategic engagement with HCWH’s Board of Directors to promote ongoing DEIB learning within the Board and more diverse Board makeup.
Strong candidates for the Head of DEIB role will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following experiences, characteristics, and qualifications:
• At least seven years of professional experience in relevant roles, including success in leading teams and prior experience in a nonprofit, advocacy organization, or association context with a strong mission-driven culture
• Demonstrated success in advancing an organizational culture into one of diversity, equity, inclusivity, and belonging, leveraging knowledge and understanding of:
o How power manifests in matters of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, religion, ability, and socio-economic circumstances
o How to develop cultural competency within an organization and implement DEIB programs, trainings, and educational tools;
o How to engage with people from different cultures and backgrounds; awareness of how DEIB principles and practices apply outside of the United States is considered a strong benefit
• Strong strategic thinking skills, with the ability to develop responsive and actionable plans within complex, dynamic, and sometimes ambiguous contexts, leveraging strong analytical and organizational skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong interpersonal relationships at all levels of an organization and influence a wide variety of people; prior experience building relationships in a virtual environment considered a strong benefit
• Demonstrated ability in conflict resolution and mediation
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to deliver effective presentations
• Demonstrated personal commitment to ongoing learning on DEIB issues and practices
Location, Compensation & Benefits
This is a remotely-based position and HCWH is open to talented candidates based anywhere in the continental US. This role will require some domestic travel (up to 5%), with the possibility of periodic international travel.
The salary range for this position is $120,000 - $130,000.
