About Us

The Climate Breakthrough Project (Climate Breakthrough) identifies extraordinary leaders and empowers them to launch bold new strategies to address the climate crisis. Each year, we select several exceptional strategists from around the world to receive the Climate Breakthrough Award: a US$3 million dollar grant and tailored support over three years to bring visionary strategies from idea to fruition. We believe that many of the most capable leaders have not yet been given sufficient time, space, support, and funding to develop the kind of climate strategies our world desperately needs. Our program is designed to give these brilliant strategists exactly that opportunity. Our mission is reliant on reaching beyond established networks and approaches to empower a diverse range of voices, perspectives, and strategies.

Climate Breakthrough is funded by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Oak Foundation, IKEA Foundation, Good Energies Foundation, JPB Foundation, and Quadrature Climate Foundation. Launched in 2016, Climate Breakthrough has issued eleven awards to date. For more information about Climate Breakthrough and our awardees, please visit

About the Role

The Grants Manager will own Climate Breakthrough’s grantmaking and programmatic contract processes. Climate Breakthrough is in the process of spinning out from fiscal sponsorship, and the Grants Manager will play a key role in supporting that transition and establishing Climate Breakthrough’s grants management processes as an independent entity. The Grants Manager will be responsible for developing and driving the full life cycle of the organization’s grants functions, including ensuring timely disbursement of awards, management of grant reporting processes, and management of programmatic contracts in support of our awardees. This role will manage a portfolio of international grants spanning a variety of political and regulatory environments. The ideal candidate knows how to navigate complex international grantmaking environments, is excited and knowledgeable about developing a grants administration system from the ground up, and is passionate about solving the climate crisis.

The Grants Manager’s work will be divided into three main areas:

Management of Climate Breakthrough’s grants

o Ensure compliance with internal requirements and IRS regulations for grantmaking, including expenditure responsibility grants.

o Coordinate with all relevant staff and awardees to identify grantmaking needs, risks, and complexity and support the timely disbursement of grants.

o Liaise with Climate Breakthrough’s legal counsel and awardees to navigate particularly complex international grantmaking environments.

o Produce grant award letters, grant extensions, and grant amendments, including establishing templates for all such documents in coordination with legal counsel.

o Oversee grant reporting, including ensuring timely submission of grants reports, tracking and monitoring status of reports, sending report reminders, and monitoring grant payments.

Development of grants planning, systems, and infrastructure

o Develop Climate Breakthrough’s internal grantmaking systems and maintain best practices for grants administration for both incoming and outgoing grants.

o Serve as administrator for Climate Breakthrough’s CRM, CiviCRM, coordinating with the Climate Breakthrough team and outside partners as necessary to address new issues or needs.

o Maintain records for awardee grants, including timely reporting and disbursement, using Climate Breakthrough’s grants management system.

o Create and maintain a grants calendar with reporting requirements for incoming grants, and maintain all records for accurate and efficient reporting and audits.

o Coordinate with all relevant staff and funders to manage Climate Breakthrough grants reporting to funders.

o Maintain grants forms, policies, and procedures and train relevant staff as necessary.

o Stay abreast of new requirements, trends, and best practices within the field of grants management.

Management of Climate Breakthrough programmatic contracts

o Draft and review all contract agreements that are in direct service to awardees — coordinating with vendors, awardees, and legal counsel as necessary.

o Design and manage reporting system to monitor and analyze awardees’ use of support provided by Climate Breakthrough through programmatic contracts.
