About the Position:

As a member of the Conservation Programs team, the Forestry Technician will implement prescribed management strategies within Mohonk Preserve’s forested landscape such as conducting forestry activities including, but not limited to, mechanical invasive species removal, tree marking, felling and planting. The Technician will also assist with data collection relative to forest health, deer browse impacts and silvicultural treatment efficacy in the hemlock-northern hardwood and chestnut oak forest types at the Preserve.

The position is supervised by the Applied Forest Ecologist and requires working closely with other Conservation Programs and Mohonk Preserve staff. This hourly, grant-funded position runs for approximately 40 weeks, between September 2023 and July 2024, for a maximum of 1,000 hours.



· $20.00/hour; grant-funded

Essential Functions:

· Conduct forestry activities including but not limited to: tree marking and felling, planting and mechanical removal of invasive species or competing vegetation

· Install/maintain deer fencing

· Identify native and non-native plants

· Operate basic hand tools and smaller equipment such as chainsaws, brush saws and sprayers

· Drive trucks/work vehicles and equipment to and from work sites

· Navigate and work on uneven terrain, in potentially remote locations, in all weather conditions

· Collect and maintain data using ESRI GIS and Microsoft Office Suite applications


Desired Skills and Experience:

· Training and experience safely using a chainsaw

· Game of Logging Levels I & II, I-IV preferred

· Experience using basic hand tools and smaller equipment such as pole saws and brush cutters

- First-Aid/CPR certification, or ability to obtain

· Experience navigating off-trail using GPS coordinates (training is provided)

· Experience with ESRI GIS software and applications (training is provided)

· Must have a valid driver’s license



Mohonk Preserve’s main offices are located at our Visitor Center in Gardiner, NY. This position will be based out of the Preserve’s Daniel Smiley Research Center (DSRC) on the grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House resort. Mohonk Preserve offers hybrid work schedules at this time – coordinated with their supervisor and depending on the job, staff may be able to split time working remotely, as well as in the office and in-person on the land. Generally standard working hours, with some flexibility, to be coordinated with supervisor.

Physical Demands:

· Use of computer and keyboard

· Frequently works outdoors for extended periods

· Work requires standing, walking, hiking, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, lifting, carrying equipment, negotiating step ladders, lifting up to 30 lbs

· Ability to hike up to five miles in a rugged outdoor environment carrying up to 30 pounds of equipment in all weather conditions
