Internship Summary
Western Resource Advocates (WRA) seeks an Earned Media Intern to join our Marketing and Communications Team in the Fall 2023. The Earned Media Intern will help WRA craft media pitches and talking points for interviews, develop ideas for reporter cultivation, identify potential outlets to engage with, update keyword searches for monitoring coverage, create media distribution lists and tag media placements. This role will report to WRA’s communications managers. Through this internship, there will be opportunities to learn and grow while working with other marketing and communications professionals, supporting climate action, learning about conservation policies, gaining experience with project management, and creating writing samples for future employment opportunities.

Location
This position can work remotely within our seven state region, from one of offices, or a hybrid of the two. WRA has offices in Boulder, CO; Carson City, NV; Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Salt Lake City, UT; and Santa Fe, NM. WRA’s region includes Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming.
Responsibilities and Activities
- Support day-to-day media relations responsibilities.
- Craft media pitches and talking points for media interviews.
- Research and develop ideas for reporter cultivation.
- Identify potential news outlets to engage.
- Update keyword searches for monitoring media coverage.
- Create media distribution lists and tag media placements.
Qualifications
- Experience or demonstrated interest in journalism, public engagement, advocacy, and/or science communication.
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- An understanding of the news cycle, media trends, and what makes a good story.
- Organized and detail oriented.
- Strong interpersonal communication abilities.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

Compensation
Interns are paid at $17.29 per hour. This is a part-time internship with an expectation to work up to 25 hours a week. WRA regularly works with students to help them obtain school credit for their internships. Since this is a temporary internship position, interns are not eligible for any benefits, including, but not limited to: vacation and sick leave; health, vision, and dental insurance; life, short-, and long-term disability insurance; and the 401(k) retirement plan. WRA is happy to loan interns a laptop for the duration of their internship.
Timeline
The internship will take place during the Fall of 2023. While the specific dates of this internship are flexible, the start date will be sometime in late August to September, and will wrap up in November or December.
