Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.

We are at a critical crossroads: We need to rebuild — President Biden and Congress have the choice to double down on the dirty, polluting, exploitative economy of the past or building the green & just economy of the future. With less than a decade left to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis, we must demand action at the scale science and justice demands.

That’s why we’re building a grassroots people-powered network to pressure Biden and Congress to say YES to a Green New Deal and NO to fossil fuels. We can’t sit back and wait for change to happen. It is the time to go on the offense to win the world we need. Using new technologies and organizing techniques that allow people-powered campaigns to operate at unprecedented scale, we can rise to the challenges we face.

The Distributed Organizing Strategist will play a critical role, managing large-scale projects on the team to lift off and develop a new local distributed organizing model. This new organizing infrastructure will allow volunteers to organize in their own communities, learn core skills, and build relationships that keep them involved in this work for the long haul. This role will play a key role in our shift from a mobilization team to a distributed organizing team.

This role is for somebody who is passionate about strengthening and diversifying the environmental movement, and sees people power built through distributed organizing and on-the-ground action as the way to win big change.

This is a full time, exempt position based in any authorized Greenpeace state: CA, CO, CT, DC, FL, GA,  IL, MD, ME, NC, NJ, NV, NY, OR, VA, WA. This position will report to the Distributed Organizing Manager.

The Distributed Organizing Strategist will:

  • Manage critical projects that strengthen and grow Greenpeace’s local distributed organizing program, build volunteer leaders, and increase the impact of Greenpeace’s volunteer organizers.
  • Strategically build Greenpeace’s local distributed organizing network, and scale up the number of volunteers and activists working with Greenpeace to change laws and systems that are hurting people and the climate.
  • Project manage staff across the DOT in carrying out local distributed organizing work, in close consultation with line managers and with an eye toward equity and support staff development.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders from other teams (such as legal, campaigns, digital, or data) to build effective plans and better integrate our work across departments
  • Oversee the development of training curriculum and materials to support volunteers in building and using core skills for distributed organizing.
  • Lead on the data tracking strategy for the local organizing program, working with DOTs Data and Evaluation Specialist and Greenpeace’s Data department to develop systems  to track and move volunteers up the local leadership ladder.
  • Build a culture of learning and experimentation on the team, leading by example and trying out new ways of moving volunteers up our leadership ladder.
  • Keep up with industry best practices in distributed organizing and try out new ideas with Greenpeace’s supporter base.

The Minimum Requirements for the Distributed Organizing Strategist include:

  • 5+ years of organizing experience, with at least 3 years of experience in distributed organizing.
  • Strong people management skills, with 2 - 4 years of management experience (either directly or through project management)
  • Experience utilizing digital tools to mobilize people -- including CRMs, email, web tools and/or SMS (broadcast or peer-to-peer).
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage complex projects to build a distributed organizing program and produce results -- including setting project goals, building a roadmap, delegating sub-projects and tasks, and keeping the project on track to completion.
  • Ability to be agile and responsive to rapidly evolving events.
  • Eagerness to test out new methods and ideas, and learn from both failures and successes.
  • A strong commitment to building a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive movement.
  • Passion for mobilizing people and building power for progressive movements.
