GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Director of Organizing will lead the organization's efforts to build and engage an activist base. A successful applicant will incorporate the values expressed in the organization's 2021-2030 strategic plan by developing a base of supporters that reflect America’s diversity and are willing to take action to protect America’s wilderness and public lands.
This is a management position that works under the supervision of the Senior Director of Organizing and Strategic Partnerships. The Director of Organizing oversees all base building, organizing and engagement efforts. This position will work with different departments across The Wilderness Society (TWS) to ensure alignment with differing policy and organizing priorities.
The Director of Organizing will develop an online (digital) and offline (field) plan that incorporates both digital and field organizing tactics. The position will take advantage of all organizing levers available to develop a list of advocates through list acquisition, peer to peer texting campaigns, email and social media organizing opportunities. The ultimate goal is to build a base of engaged advocates who will become the backbone of our advocacy efforts and move up the TWS ladder of engagement.
This is a highly collaborative position that works with external affairs on a shared advocacy strategy and other programmatic teams within the organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Design and implement a national organizing plan to cultivate a base of supporters reflective of the diversity of America.
● Develop monthly, quarterly, and annual activist engagement goals
● Work across departments and teams - digital, strategic communications, government relations, and others - to build out a shared advocacy strategy that makes strategic asks of activists to achieve the organization’s top priorities
● Leads team of digital organizers, including managing contractors and junior staff as needed; act as a conduit to other organizing staff.
● Support TWS staff across the organization with training, supporting, and managing staff in a civic engagement capacity
● Draft content for online and offline mediums
● Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience, Competencies, and Education
● At least 5 to 7 years experience in organizing, and executing movement building campaigns and/or programs
● Strong field program management skills, ideally with both field and digital, including the ability to write, evaluate, and execute winning campaigns
● Proficiency using member databases such as EveryAction, Votebuilder (VAN) or similar management systems
● Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives
● Experience with digital organizing program and new voter contact technologies
● Strong project management skills and the ability to prioritize and manage a variety of projects simultaneously.
● Exceptional interpersonal skills and able to work with diverse stakeholders and proven track record for building lasting partnerships
● Experience coordinating or managing volunteers or staff
● Ability to travel within the U.S. approximately 20% of the time.
● Ability to be flexible and adapt to shifting priorities and plans
