Oceana is the world’s largest nonprofit organization focused solely on restoring the resilience and abundance of the ocean. Since being founded in 2001, we have won more than 225 policy victories and protected nearly 4 million square miles of ocean.
We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. Our campaigns focus on getting policy changes in countries that, govern nearly one-third of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, Canada and the European Union.
The Director, Digital Marketing leads and optimizes our digital and social media strategies to raise funds, grow our grassroots activist base and win policy campaigns. This position leads the Digital and Social Media teams with five full-time staff and works collaboratively with other team members in the international marketing and communications department as well as members of different departments and country teams. To succeed in this role, the Director must have proven experience implementing effective cross-channel digital fundraising and engagement strategies, specifically email appeals, website optimization, paid digital advertising, organic social media content strategy. The Director will work on many different projects or needs on any given day and should be comfortable meeting tight deadlines and managing requests from diverse stakeholders.
The ideal candidate recognizes the need to be flexible and act differently in different situations, especially when managing staff and working with internal stakeholders – bringing empathy in times of stress and change, firm direction in times of uncertainty, or diplomacy in times of conflict. That flexibility should extend to the candidate’s work product as well, capable of quickly adapting to new situations and to draw on past successes and failures to solve current problems. S/he can see the big picture and acts today in a way that leads to achieving future objectives.
