Digital Marketing Manager

Communications Department

Union of Concerned Scientists

Cambridge, MA (preferred) or Washington, DC Office

The Position

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.

Are you up for the challenge of transforming climate despair into climate action? Can you distill nuanced ideas into inspiring messaging that will attract new audiences to our work? Can you help a science-based nonprofit stand out in the crowded field of digital advertising? UCS is looking for a creative and tech-savvy digital marketer to join our Communication Department. In your role, you’ll manage digital advertising campaigns and grassroots messaging to recruit and inspire people to take action to defend science, help stop global warming, fight environmental racism, and protect the planet. As part of the digital engagement team, the Digital Marketing Manager is responsible for planning and executing paid media strategies, including managing a large marketing budget to recruit and engage UCS supporters.

Responsibilities

This integral member of the UCS digital engagement team will be overall responsible for managing the organization’s digital advertising, online activist recruitment, and SMS programs to best maximize visibility for UCS and our issues, engage supporters in our campaigns, and contribute to campaign impact. We will ask you to:

· Lead our efforts to raise the profile of our campaigns, outreach efforts, reports, and staff experts, and engage supporters in our work

· Serves as project manager for digital marketing work

· Work with our fundraising department and outside consultants to conceptualize, review, and monitor search, remarketing, and donor recruitment/upgrade digital advertising

· Develop first drafts of ad copy, then seek input from stakeholders, make edits, and set up final versions in various ad platforms

· Work with the Communications art director to design/approve all marketing imagery, memes, and graphics

· Be responsible for all technical setup and implementation across ad platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Google AdWords, etc.) including overall QA process and audience management

· Work with your colleagues in data operations to track our campaigns and metrics

· Develop and execute annual plans to recruit new email and SMS subscribers for the organization

· Work with UCS staff across departments to conceptualize, draft, and implement SMS campaigns that will engage our supporters and contribute to campaign impact

· Work closely with colleagues to coordinate messaging and outreach across communications channels

· Be open to learning and deepening your understanding of the historical context for racial inequity, and its present-day implications for our work and messaging

· Keep up with best practices in online marketing, and assist in updating user manuals and tips sheets for UCS staff

Qualifications and Experience

Must have a track record of developing and implementing effective digital advertising campaigns. Experience leveraging digital marketing channels to advance organizational goals. The position requires excellent copywriting and editing skills for advocacy, email, and digital marketing messages. Ability to analyze metrics and make strategic decisions based on results. Outstanding attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to work well in a team environment and independently are essential. Capacity to manage multiple projects and deadlines with ease. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. The position requires a minimum of five to seven years of comparable-level experience including five years of experience in digital advertising and activism. Spanish language skills are a plus.

May spend extended periods at the computer terminal. Some minimal overnight travel may be required per year (when it is safe to do so).
