Greenpeace is seeking a  Development Director - Leadership Giving  to lead the strategy, implementation and day-to-day operations of Greenpeace USA’s fundraising programs for Greenpeace Fund (a 501c3 organization) and Greenpeace Inc (a 501c4 organization)  including:  the Major Donor and Planned Giving programs as well as the Global Capital Campaign and Key Influencer work.

The Development Director - Leadership Giving  is critical in developing Greenpeace’s capacity to raise essential support to sustain the organization and expand its long term impact, and serves on the Development Leadership Team.  They will work in close collaboration with Greenpeace’s Global Major Gifts Managers and global stakeholders to identify key opportunities that dramatically increase support for the global organization’s strategic priorities. In collaboration with the Development leadership team, the Development Director - Leadership Giving will develop and implement a robust donor advancement system throughout all Greenpeace donor programs.  This system will effectively identify prospective high-value supporters and cultivate fruitful, long-term relationships—through meaningful messaging and strategic stewardship and engagement—to secure donations for Greenpeace Campaigns.

The successful candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial development professional with a track record of securing a variety of major gifts and the ability to  inspire, motivate and lead our Fundraising staff.  They will have significant experience managing large, diverse, and complex teams to achieve significant growth; and experience managing major gifts and planned giving programs. This is an exempt, full-time , benefits eligible position reporting to the Chief Development Officer based in Washington, DC or Oakland, CA. area.

The Development Director - Leadership Giving will:

  • Provide world-class leadership to the Major Gifts and Planned Giving Teams, motivating, coaching and developing fundraisers committed to engagement and diversifying our donor base and developing a clear vision and fundraising plan to achieve ambitious long-term financial growth for the organization.
  • Encourage a culture of high performance, continuous learning and commitment to quality by setting and modeling high standards, including through establishing and monitoring staff performance and development goals, regular performance feedback, supporting career development opportunities,  fostering a collaborative environment of growth and learning and facilitating a healthy work/life balance.
  • Supervising all aspects of the major gift program’s $8  million dollar revenue and $2  million dollar expenditure  budgets, including development, implementation, tracking, and regular reporting to staff, the senior management team and the boards of directors.
  • In collaboration with the Board Fundraising Chair, determine Board fundraising goals and objectives based on projections and oversee the process of fundraising staff partnering with board members to reach goals, including 100 percent board personal giving.
  • In partnership with fundraising team, design, manage and execute donor solicitation and stewardship events; this includes small scale donor gatherings and large-scale organization driven events (annual gala, ship-based donor engagements, etc), .
  • Work in partnership with international fundraising teams and key global stakeholders,  for developing international fundraising campaign programs, identifying areas for significant major gifts growth as well as factors for success that need to be addressed and providing  recommendations to the Greenpeace Global Growth Committee and leadership
  • Serve as a member of the US team who  is engaged  in the Global Capital Campaign and New Ship build work, working with the global team as well as within the US team.
  • Partner with the Senior Management Team, Development managers, Board of Directors, and programmatic staff to cultivate a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization, including deploying organizational leaders in high donor fundraising efforts as needed.
  • Ensure clear, accurate, and consistent reporting and communication between the Finance and Development departments, reviewing and tracking annual and long-term income and expenditure budgets for Major Gifts and Planned Giving.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and financial analyses for the Senior Management Team as well as presentations for the Board(s) of Directors on progress toward financial goals, and provide guidance and direction to achieve objectives.
  • Mentor staff engaged in  work partnering with Key Influencers to achieve organizational and fundraising goals.
  • Mentor and manage staff with a commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Justice principles
  • Oversee the development, testing, and implementation of new and creative fundraising programs to attract new donors and upgrade current donors to the mid-level and major level.
  • Engage diverse audiences in Greenpeace’s fundraising work, reaching the diversity of Americans who care about our environment.

Minimum requirements include:

  • 10+ years of proven success in major gifts and planned giving for advocacy related issues, including personal cultivation and solicitation of $6+ figure donors,  and at least five years managing large and complex teams.
  • Experience with personally cultivating and soliciting high-value supporters, including $6+ figure donors,  and directly engaging board members with fundraising efforts.
  • Ability to serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team working on organizational strategy and planning.
  • Strong management skill set and the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop a diverse staff, including team members working around the world.
  • Experience creating and growing major gifts fundraising programs, including demonstrated expertise in quickly scaling up revenue.
  • Ability to understand complex financial tracking and reporting systems and attention to detail to insure all financial expenses and revenue are tracked properly.

Additional requirements  include, but are not limited to:

  • Entrepreneurship, including a proven ability to develop and execute new fundraising models.
  • Experience implementing and managing the operational infrastructure required for a successful development program, including database systems and vendor and finance management.
  • Ability to work closely across departments and teams to develop and execute communications, marketing, or public relations strategies to support resource development.
  • Strong commitment to strengthening and increasing awareness within the organization of fundraising as a form of activism, communication, and education, and
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent experience; graduate degree preferred.
