To combat these environmental challenges, we rely on a 20 person strong Fundraising staff and nearly two hundred thousand  supporters across the United States that give their all in our fight together for a green and peaceful future.  As such, we are hiring a highly qualified Development Director - Institutional Giving   to lead the strategy, implementation and day-to-day operations of Greenpeace USA’s foundation fundraising programs for Greenpeace Fund (a 501c3 organization) and Greenpeace Inc. (a 501c4 organization).

The Development Director - Institutional Giving  is critical in developing Greenpeace’s capacity to raise essential support to sustain the organization and expand its long term impact, and serves on the Development Leadership Team.

The successful candidate will be an innovative and entrepreneurial development professional with a track record of securing large-scale foundation support and the ability to  inspire, motivate and lead our foundation fundraising staff.  They will have a strong understanding of the foundation landscape for environmental funders, a firm understanding of the issues associated with environmental work, and an ability to match funders with the appropriate portfolio of work. This is an ideal opportunity for a driven professional with strong philanthropic networks, demonstrated success in reaching ambitious fundraising goals, and who wants to  end climate change and preserve the planet for future generations. This is an exempt, full-time, benefits eligible position reporting to the Chief Development Officer based in the Washington, DC, New York, or Oakland, CA area. Other locations considered on a case-by-case basis..

The Development Director - Institutional Giving will:

  • Provide world-class leadership to the Foundations Team, motivating, coaching and developing fundraisers committed to engaging and diversifying our donor base and developing a vision and fundraising plan to achieve ambitious long term financial growth for the organization.
  • Encourage a culture of high performance, continuous learning and commitment to quality by setting and modeling high standards, including through establishing and monitoring staff performance and development goals, regular performance feedback, supporting career development opportunities,  fostering a collaborative environment of growth and learning and facilitating a healthy work/life balance.
  • Create a strategic growth plan to rapidly expand on the current $3 million domestic revenue stream and $4.5 million international revenue stream. The expectation is to triple the foundations revenue in two to three years.
  • Oversee the revenue and expenditure budgets, including development, implementation, tracking, and regular reporting to staff, the senior management team and the boards of directors.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Senior Management Team to create strategic fundraising plans for senior leadership. Deploy leadership to cultivate, steward and solicit donors in the highest-impact way.
  • Work with Program Department leadership to cultivate lead fundraisers within each campaign, identify funding opportunities and create impactful proposals.
  • Develop a deep understanding of programmatic work and ability to articulate the work to funders and internal audiences.
  • Create systems for knowledge sharing and opportunity identification between Development and Program.
  • Work in partnership with international fundraising teams and key global stakeholders,  for international fundraising campaign program development, identifying areas for significant foundation growth as well as factors for success that need to be addressed and providing  recommendations to Greenpeace Global Growth Committee and leadership
  • Partner with the Senior Management Team, Development managers, Board of Directors, and programmatic staff to cultivate a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.
  • Ensure clear, accurate, and consistent reporting and communication between the Finance and Development departments, reviewing and tracking annual and long-term income and expenditure budgets. Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of restricted gifts and  c3/ c4 foundation activities and expenditures.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports and financial analyses for the Senior Management
  • Team as well as presentations for the Board(s) of Directors on progress toward financial goals, and provide guidance and direction to achieve objectives.
  • Work with the legal team to ensure the Foundations Team follows  legal, regulatory and compliance issues and that grant proposals, allocation and reporting is strategic and compliant.

Minimum requirements include:

  • 10+  years of proven success in foundations for advocacy related issues, track record of raising 6+ figure gifts  and at least five years in staff management.
  • Experience with personally cultivating and soliciting high-value supporters and directly engaging board members with fundraising efforts.
  • Ability to serve as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team working on organizational strategy and planning.
  • Strong management skill set and the ability to motivate, inspire, and develop a diverse staff, including team members working around the world.
  • Experience creating and growing foundation fundraising programs, including demonstrated expertise in quickly scaling up revenue from large and complex global funders.
  • Experience managing grant creation process, including an ability to understand complex programmatic work and coach writers that translate this work into funding proposals.
  • Ability to understand complex financial tracking and reporting systems and attention to detail to insure all financial expenses and revenue are tracked properly.

Additional requirements  include, but are not limited to:

  • Entrepreneurship, including a proven ability to develop and execute new fundraising programs.
  • Experience implementing and managing the operational infrastructure required for a successful development program, including database systems and vendor and finance management.
  • Strong commitment to strengthening and increasing awareness within the organization of fundraising as a form of activism, communication, and education, and
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent experience.
