Scope: The Deputy Press Secretary plans, coordinates, and executes media strategies related to the Sierra Club's work to transition the country off of gas. In collaboration with Sierra Club teams and partners, the Deputy Press Secretary is responsible for planning and implementing long-term and rapid-response media outreach plans to advance the campaign's goals at the federal level, and coordinates communications with the appropriate regional staff. This position is responsible for a diverse array of media communications, ensuring timely and accurate materials with a consistent tone and message. The ideal candidate has experience within a values-driven organization, and has a passion for working towards a more just and equitable planet where each of us has access to clean air, safe drinking water, and a livable future.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- Plan and implement media strategy on federal gas issues. Serve as liaison across internal teams and committees, as well as with external partners and stakeholders, to advise on communications strategies and tactics. Develop and execute long-term and rapid-response media outreach plans to advance campaign narratives and outcomes.
- Develop messaging and written materials to advance campaign goals. Develop media messages, op-eds, press releases, talking points, and other materials, and coordinate media events as necessary. Create strategic media responses to relevant reports and external developments.
- Build relationships with national, regional, and trade reporters. Serve as the campaign's point of contact for those reporters in order to advance media coverage. Pitch relevant stories and connect reporters with spokespeople.
- Train and coach staff and volunteers in media skills. Identify, train, and place compelling spokespeople to tell the campaign's stories. Support staff, volunteers, and partners with media training, messaging guidance, and interview preparation.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- Experience with media relations. You have professional experience as a media liaison, journalist, or other position involving media and press relations. You have an understanding of best practices for using media to advance campaign goals.
- Excellent writing and verbal communications skills. You are a strong writer and communicator who is comfortable interacting with reporters, developing compelling messages, and drafting written materials for various audiences.
- Ability to interact cooperatively and effectively with internal and external partners. You think collaboratively and can build strong relationships with staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders. You are capable of navigating challenging dynamics to achieve shared goals.
- Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems, and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
- Demonstrated knowledge of climate and environmental justice issues and relevant media landscape
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and balance competing priorities
- Proficiency with Cision, TVEyes, and/or other media outreach and tracking tools
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $72,000 - 80,000 for salary Region 1 work location of Oakland, CA or Washington, DC. A lower starting salary may apply for remote based hires.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union or Sierra Employee Alliance, depending on location.
