The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces students and recent graduates, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was. Position Overview: The Archeology Member will undertake archeological site updates and condition assessments within Channel Islands National Park. Fieldwork will include updating site record forms, GIS mapping, creating hand-drawn maps, and taking photographs. Locations chosen for site updates will be those that are regularly accessed by park visitors on Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel Island (this includes remote, backcountry locations). Office work will entail entering all data into the NPS Cultural Resources Inventory System (CRIS), synthesizing and presenting results and recommendations to Park management and Tribal partners. A key part of this project is developing future monitoring recommendations that will be folded into the ongoing Channel Islands National Park Backcountry Wilderness Management Plan.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: This position will be half remote and half backcountry fieldwork. The remote portions will be Monday-Friday; 8:30am-5:00pm. Travel to the park and islands will be required for 4-5 separate trips (see below for available travel assistance). Each trip will be approximately 8 days in the field.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $580/week to offset the costs of food, housing, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

AmeriCorps Education Award Program: This position may be eligible for an 450-hour AmeriCorps Education Award while serving under the EAP 2022/23 grant year program, valued up to $1,718.25 upon successful completion of a complete service term and service hours.

Loan Forbearance: AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for federal loan forbearance. Additional enrollment steps are required.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility, or view general information online here.

Housing: There is a cost associated with the housing for the on-site fieldwork portion of this position, but that cost will be fully reimbursed to the ACE Member. Park housing consists of shared rooms (typically 2 people) and access to a communal bathroom and kitchen facilities. Housing is the responsibility of the ACE member and is not provided by ACE or NPS on the mainland during the remote portion.

Travel Allowance: Reimbursements not to exceed $4,500 will be provided to help offset the cost of travel between the ACE member's residence and the park for the fieldwork trips and cover other travel expenses like boat tickets, reimbursing NPS housing costs, per diem, etc.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include archeological field methods (survey, mapping, site recording) and data entry.



  • Possess a degree, have experience, and/or demonstrated interest in archeology, anthropology, or a related discipline
  • Must have completed an archeological field school or a rigorous field methods class
  • Comfortable working independently in rugged field conditions
  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required three-part criminal history check
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike 10 miles and work in rough terrain (i.e. rugged backcountry environments).
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 45 pounds, ability to move up to 60 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates. There will be safety precautions taken during each field visit to prevent and avoid potential dangers in the field. Cell service on the islands is extremely limited, although most park housing has (limited) Wi-Fi. Office environment conditions; indoor air quality is good and temperature is controlled.
  • Travel: This position requires travel to and from field sites. Reaching the islands requires a 1-4 hour boat ride in often rough sea conditions.
