Location Details/Description: Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site - Brookline, MA
Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) is recognized as the founder of American landscape architecture. In 1883, after supervising the design and construction of such landmarks as Central Park and the US Capitol Grounds, Olmsted moved his family from New York City to 99 Warren Street in Brookline, Massachusetts. It was here that he also re-established his office. "Fairsted," as he called it, served as both a home and the world's first full-scale professional practice of landscape architecture. All the processes of design, from drafting to printing, were carried out here. Thousands of projects, from conception to completion, are reflected in the vast design records of the Olmsted firm. The work of the Brookline office continued for nearly a century with Olmsted, his sons, and their associates designing thousands of public and private landscape projects across the United States. The National Park Service acquired Olmsted's home and office in 1979 and maintains many of the working records in the interest of understanding and preserving the special places this firm created.

Position Overview: This position will work directly within the park's Visitor Engagement, Community Experience, and Education team. Alongside park staff and partners, this member will support on and off-site community-based programming. Programming may include tours of Olmsted National Historic Site, facilitated programming in local Olmsted-designed landscapes, and support community outreach events like "Sundays at the Shattuck" and "Parks as Platform."
This position will balance indoor office work and outdoor public programming.
This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. The member will have opportunities to job shadow and support work across cultural resources, landscape management, and historic building maintenance. Additional training may be available in areas such as youth development, audience-centered experiences, and digital media (dependent on member interest and need).
Schedule: The member will work Wednesday-Sunday (8:30-5:00). Some shifted hours may occur to accommodate an evening event.
Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $800/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE or NPS.
Public Transportation Assistance: ACE members will have access to up to $90/month, not to exceed $270 total, to be used for eligible public transportation expenses. Further details regarding distribution of these funds will be provided during the interview process.
Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.

- Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
- Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

- Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a associates or bachelors degree and/or have relevant experience, education, or interest in subject areas such as history, landscape architecture, community development, urban planning, or education.

- Ability and willingness to talk to new people, engage with partners, be creative, adapt to new environments, and facilitate experiences for the public.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:
- Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to [stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch.
- Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
- Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 20 lbs., ability to move up to 50 pounds.
- Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
- Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and visitors talking. Outdoor noise may include light traffic, and general park noises. Some special events may include loud music.
- Travel: This position does not require unique travel.
Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
