Job Summary

The BEES Department invites applications for a tenure-track Professor at the Associate level or higher for the Betz Chair of Ecology. The position is an endowed university chair funded by the Betz Endowment at Drexel University. We seek an innovative scientist and an experienced leader to build a program at the interface of ecology and sustainability. We invite outstanding researchers whose work focuses on urban ecology, conservation, global change, climate change impacts and adaptation, or coupled human-natural systems. Candidates who utilize natural history collections in their research, or those with expertise or experience in environmental equity, systems thinking, and modeling, translational ecology, or community science are especially encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions

  • Leadership – The position is intended to strengthen and build an interdisciplinary team in the areas of ecology and sustainability. Engagement with other college and university units including the Academy of Natural Sciences and the Environmental Collaboratory (see below) is expected.
  • Teaching and Research– Applicants must have demonstrated capability of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level, as well as mentoring, academic management and grantsmanship.
  • A strong program in extramural funding is expected to complement funding from the Betz Endowment.
  • Service – In addition to leading in the areas noted above, service on relevant committees at the departmental, college, and university level are expected.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate in ecology, environmental science, or related field.
  • 5+years of university-level teaching and research experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States if offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a tenure-track position at university level.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Track record of high-level scholarly research and productivity, including extramural funding and peer reviewed publication.

About the BEES Department
The BEES Department in the College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS) comprises a diverse group of ecologists, evolutionary biologists, geoscientists, and environmental scientists, and offers majors in geoscience, environmental studies and sustainability, and environmental sciences with several tracks. We currently have 140 undergraduate and 40 graduate students within all three majors.  The Department is a leader in environmental research, aquatic ecosystem research, and biodiversity research. The successful candidate will be expected to take a leadership role in building upon this foundation in the broad area of ecology and sustainability.  The holder of the Betz Chair will be expected to contribute actively to the work outlined in the department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement, below.

Academy of Natural Sciences

Many BEES faculty have joint appointments with the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) of Drexel, where they work as Curators in the Center for Systematic Biology and Evolution (CSBE) or as research scientists in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research (PCER).  ANS is the oldest natural history museum in the western hemisphere, and CSBE collections comprise more than 17,000,000 specimens of plants and animals widely used in research and education at levels from K-12 to university. The PCER, named after National Medal of Science winner and noted ecologist Dr. Ruth Patrick, is an important research center of ANS, with a long history of research and assessment on environmental issues, particularly in aquatic ecosystems.

The Environmental Collaboratory

The Environmental Collaboratory (TEC) is a major university initiative to address the environmental challenges facing society. TEC will be a groundbreaking approach that unites Drexel, the Academy, and communities of need in a shared endeavor to sustain our planet and mitigate its degradation. TEC will coordinate, develop, integrate, and resource research, education, civic engagement, and public programming to solve problems and shape culture.
