Job Overview: The BEES Department invites applications for a tenure-track Professor at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Community/Ecosystem Ecology. We invite outstanding researchers whose work focuses on community, ecosystem, or landscape processes. While area of expertise is open, we are especially interested in candidates working on freshwater or coastal systems, spatial analysis, environmental assessment/remediation, or environmental impacts of land-use and climate change. We seek an innovative scientist who can take advantage of connections with members of the BEES Department, the Academy of Natural Sciences, or other programs at Drexel such as the Department of Biology or the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering.

About the BEES Department
The BEES Department in the College of Arts and Sciences (CoAS) comprises a diverse group of ecologists, evolutionary biologists, geoscientists, and environmental scientists. The Department has research strengths in environmental science, aquatic ecosystems, and biodiversity. Our student body includes approximately 170 undergraduate majors, 10 masters students and 30 PhD students. We offer undergraduate majors in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies & Sustainability, and Geoscience, and a graduate major in Ecology, Evolution & Earth Systems.

Drexel provides excellent opportunities for collaboration and connections for research and teaching through the Academy of Natural Sciences, the Department of Biology, the Department of Sociology, the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering and the Environmental Collaboratory. Drexel is engaged in university initiatives to focus research and teaching effort on global environmental awareness, sustainability, and climate-related studies, with opportunities for incoming faculty play a role in these initiatives.

Academy of Natural Sciences

Many BEES faculty have joint appointments with the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) of Drexel, where they work as Curators in the Center for Systematic Biology and Evolution (CSBE) or as research scientists in the Patrick Center for Environmental Research (PCER). ANS is the oldest natural history museum in the western hemisphere, and CSBE collections comprise more than 17,000,000 specimens of plants and animals widely used in research and education at levels from K-12 to university. The PCER, named after National Medal of Science winner and noted ecologist Dr. Ruth Patrick, is an important research center of ANS, with a long history of research and assessment on environmental issues, particularly in aquatic ecosystems.

College of Arts and Sciences

Our research and scholarship explore contemporary issues with an eye toward improving the common good. Essential Position Functions:

  • Research – expected to develop a strong externally-funded research program.
  • Teaching – expected to teach introductory to upper-level classes in any of the following areas: community ecology, ecosystem/landscape ecology, spatial ecology/analysis, aquatic ecology, or environmental assessment.
  • Service – In addition to leading in the areas noted above, service on relevant committees at the departmental, college, or university level are expected.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or Doctorate in ecology, environmental science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated teaching and research experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education.
  • Must be legally able to work in the United States if offered the position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral experience in field of study
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Initial level of scholarly research and productivity, including extramural funding and peer reviewed publications.
