The Climate Change and Health Advisor is a critical member of the Save the Children US (SCUS) Department of Global Health (DGH) team and will provide institutional, technical and strategic guidance and support to Save the Children’s global work to mitigate and address the impact of climate change on health. You will: assess and track global and country level evidence to identify priorities for addressing the impact of climate change on health; provide technical assistance to country offices to help assess needs and opportunities; lead technical design of Green Climate Fund and proposals to other donors; and design and support the implementation of high quality, effective, state-of-the-art programs to address or mitigate the impact of climate change on health in selected high priority country offices. You will also represent Save the Children’s global work to address the impact of climate change on health.

What You’ll Be Doing (Essential Duties)

Mobilize Public and Private Resources

  • Lead technical design of Green Climate Fund that contribute to realizing the organization’s vision, strategy and operational plan for the impact of climate change on health.
  • Provide technical expertise to other proposals that include the impact of climate change on health.
  • Develop long-term funding strategies for SC’s technical and programming priorities in climate change and health, in particular with the Climate Crisis private resources fundraising group.
  • Establish and maintain new/existing relationships with key donors (especially supporting and engaging with SC/Australia on the Green Climate Fund).
  • Establish and maintain new/existing relationships with strategic climate partners.
  • Orient Save the Children technical staff to climate donor priorities and application processes.

Provide Technical Leadership and Support in Addressing Climate Change and Health (25%)

  • In collaboration with the Senior Director, Nutrition & WASH, the DGH Senior Leadership Team, the Climate Change lead within International Programs, and other colleagues within SCUS and the SC movement, define the vision, strategy and operational plan for SC’s global work to address the impact of climate change on health.
  • Be accountable for achieving the results set out in the strategic and operational plans and be able to articulate sector approach(es) to measuring global results and monitoring progress toward agreed upon results.
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight to ensure programs apply evidence-based interventions and approaches in our programs, and develop and support new state-of-the-art approaches.
  • Serve as a principal expert on the impact of climate change on health within Save the Children globally.
  • Contribute to the development of a new global strategy for Climate Change for Save the Children.
  • Work with SC members and SC country offices to build programming capacity to address the impact of climate change on health, including approaches to integrating health related efforts with work in hunger and livelihoods and connect development and humanitarian assistance efforts related to climate change impacts.

Lead Program Learning and Innovation Related to Climate Change and Health (15%)

  • Articulate key climate change and health program innovation and learning priorities
  • Identify and share best practices from country programs and global work, document these practices, and disseminate and promote uptake within the agency through the Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability Technical Working Groups
  • Support monitoring and evaluation, with a focus on sound data collection, analysis, and interpretation for program management, proposal development, and documentation of project innovations and impact. Support high quality baseline, midterm and final evaluations and other program planning assessments.
  • Initiate planning and implementation of skill development/training/capacity building for Save the Children, specific to the DGH portfolio, including development and review of training materials.
  • Collaborate with other SC members on technical issues through the Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability Technical Working Group.

Technical Leadership for Policy and Advocacy (10%)

  • Help define SC’s global advocacy agenda to address key agency priorities.
  • Contribute to building alliances and strategic partnerships to influence policy and support learning and innovation.
  • Provide expertise related to climate change and health to implementation of larger agency advocacy efforts.
  • Provide guidance for country level advocacy efforts as necessary and appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree, plus at least 7 years of relevant experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the evidence, science and mitigation approaches for climate change and the impact climate change has had on health in low and middle-income countries
  • Proven successful track record in developing effective and responsive project proposals.
  • Demonstrated experience with global donors and proven successful record of fostering new and effective partnerships with international partners.
  • Professional proficiency in MS Office suite.
  • Professional proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally up to 15%

Preferred Qualifications

  • International development experience in any of the following technical topics as they relate to climate change: child health, nutrition, water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH), social & behavior change, community health, health systems, maternal and newborn health, adolescent health, family planning
  • Familiarity with the UN Green Climate Fund
  • Experience working on health programs across rural and urban contexts
