Director of Community Organizing / Wilderness Workshop / Carbondale, Colo.

In support of Wilderness Workshop’s mission to protect public lands, the Director of Community Organizing leads our organizing work with the goal of creating broad, deep and diverse support for public lands conservation throughout our region. The Director of Community Organizing is primarily responsible for creating a culture of activism in our local community and engaging the public in support of our public lands conservation efforts, and collaborates with other staff to achieve the organization’s programmatic goals. The Director of Community Organizing and the Defiende Nuestra Tierra Director are responsible for the organizing component of all initiatives and campaigns at WW, and work together to ensure WW’s organizing efforts as a whole are culturally representative of and relevant to the diverse community we serve.

Primary Responsibilities

- Identify, cultivate, train, engage, and empower a broad and diverse set of activists on WW’s priority conservation issues.
- �Increase community literacy and advocacy concerning public lands and conservation, using strategic and effective principles of community organizing to recruit, train, and mobilize members of the community
- Develop and implement community organizing plans in support of priority projects, campaigns and policy goals.
- Establish relationships with community leaders, elected officials, government staff, and other stakeholders to build strategic partnerships and identify supporters and allies.
- Collaborate with the Communications Director to develop external communications that support our organizing work and vice versa, including framing discussion of our issues in the media, assisting with our social media channels, and managing all of WW’s digital and online organizing and activism. 
- Organize events to engage our community in our work, including public meetings, workshops, hikes, happy hours and our annual community party.
- Help our community connect with our local public lands through outdoor opportunities such as backcountry recreation and wilderness experiences.
- Build a more empowered electorate within WW’s service area.

Desired Qualifications

- At least 3 years of direct community organizing experience, including experience empowering community members to take action through participatory democracy and issue advocacy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with grassroots methods of building collective voice for action.
- Collaborative and experience working in a team environment.
- Excellent organization skills, attention to detail, professionalism, ability to meet deadlines. 
- Experience and comfort working with people of widely diverging backgrounds, cultures, political beliefs, and socio-economic strata.
- Experience with earned media and managing professional social media accounts.
- Experience with online advocacy platforms, database management and office software.
- Commitment to public lands conservation.  
- Spanish language skills.

What are the Rewards
The salary range for the Director of Community Organizing is $55,000-$70,000. Compensation will reflect the applicant’s qualifications and previous experience. The benefits package includes health insurance, a retirement plan, vacation days and federal holidays, a sabbatical policy, wellness days, sick days and a family leave policy. Relocation support is also available for qualified candidates who are ready to move to our mountain community.
