GreenLatinos Statement on the Nomination of Andrew Wheeler to Lead the Environmental Protection Agency.
Today, Acting EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler was nominated by President Trump to officially lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Andrew Wheeler’s nomination, we believe, portends a continuation of former Administrator Pruitt's polluting agenda of diminishing environmental protections and favoring corporate interest and financial investments over the health of our families. In response GreenLatinos President and CEO, Mark Magaña released the following statement:
“President Trump has appointed a former coal industry lobbyist, and an individual who has previously lobbied against bedrock environmental protections vital to the health of our communities and all Americans, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During his time as Acting EPA Administrator, Andrew Wheeler continues to push forward the anti-environmental agenda set forth by previous EPA Administrator Pruitt and the Trump Administration. In the last two years, we have witnessed numerous rollbacks to regulations meant to improve the quality of our air and water across the nation. The health and well-being of Latino communities across the nation have been threatened by EPA’s inability to complete its mission of safeguarding our environment and serving the American people. Latinos are disproportionately impacted by fossil fuel pollution, inadequate access to clean water, and are on the frontlines of climate change impacts as witnessed by extreme weather disasters in California, Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico.
American’s reject harmful impacts to the quality of our air and water and GreenLatinos is committed to challenge all efforts by this administration to repeal crucial environmental protections. Therefore, GreenLatinos rejects the nomination of Anthony Wheeler
for EPA Administrator, and requests the U.S. Senate to vote against a climate-change
denier and put the health of American families over the wealth of fossil fuel industries.”
