GreenLatinos Applauds Avi Kwa Ame National Monument Designation

WASHINGTON - This Wednesday, President Joe Biden committed to designate Avi Kwa Ame as the next historical National Monument of the United States.

Following the news of this historical pledge, GreenLatinos Founding President and CEO Mark Magaña releases the following statement:

“GreenLatinos applauds the President’s historic commitment to protect Tribal lands by designating the sacred Avi Kwa Ame historic mountain and canyon region of Southern Nevada as a national monument. This National Monument Designation is a pivotal opportunity for restoring trust with tribal nations while protecting the ecological integrity of lands essential to the wellbeing of the region’s plants, animals, and communities: a welcomed contribution towards addressing the climate and biodiversity crises. We urge the President to fulfill this commitment as soon as possible. We expect that the details of a proclamation and boundaries will fully honor the Tribes’ proposals by permanently conserving Avi Kwa Ame in its natural state, buffered from industrialization, to keep with the America The Beautiful Initative’s commitment to honor Tribal sovereignty and supporting the priorities of Tribal Nations.”
