GreenLatinos Sustainable Communities Program Director Appointed Member of ACTE

WASHINGTON — 8/17/2023: Andrea Marpillero-Colomina, the GreenLatinos Sustainable Communities Program Director, was appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee on Transportation Equity (ACTE.)

Members of the Advisory Committee are chosen from academia, the private sector, and the transportation industry. They encompass specialists in community engagement, transportation planning, design, research, policy, advocacy, and matters concerning diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). The team's inaugural gathering is scheduled for the upcoming autumn season.

Andreas has stated, “I’m honored to be appointed a member of the DOT ACTE and join this wonderful group of colleagues to advance the Biden administration, and, specifically, US DOT’s, commitment to advancing environmental justice, and to make reparations for problematic and sometimes intentionally harmful government policies and practices of the past and present. Today, 45 million people in the U.S. live within 300 feet of a major roadway or transportation facility. Transportation is the number one source of GHG emissions and smog and soot air pollution from vehicles are among the greatest threats to public health. Nationwide, Latino/es and other people of color experience disproportionate exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5), leading to higher rates of asthma, lung disease, heart disease, and other pollution triggered conditions, which can be fatal. Today, we are in an unprecedented moment – we now have the technology and funding available to create a clean and equitable transportation future for all. Let’s get to work!.”

Andrea advocates for policymaking that will create a just and environmentally sustainable future for our communities. Her passion is making places function and feel better for the people who inhabit them, while advancing equity, supporting anti-racist practices, honoring history, and creating healthy and beautiful public space. She holds a PhD in Urban and Public Policy from The New School, an MS in Urban Planning from Columbia University, and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College.
