GreenLatinos Statement in Recognition of The White House's Proclamation of June as National Immigrant Heritage Month

In recognition of The White House’s proclamation on National Immigrant Heritage Month, GreenLatinos Founding President & CEO Mark Magaña released the following statement:

Long before and since its inception, what we now know as the United States of America, has been synonymous with immigrants and immigration. As many GreenLatinos members know through their own lived experiences, migration is central to who we are as Latino/a/x gente. Our natural world and the animal kingdom know no borders. Migration is something that is innate and is often necessary for survival. 

This proclamation marks June as National Immigrant Heritage Month. For the first time in this country’s history, the heritage, culture, and contributions of immigrant communities are being honored by the federal government via a proclamation issued by the White House. 

GreenLatinos applauds this proclamation, commends the Biden Administration for its effort to highlight immigrant communities across the United States, and celebrates the rich cultural tapestry immigrants bring to this country.

As we celebrate this announcement, we also want to acknowledge the tragic reality facing many immigrants across the U.S. and at the Mexico-United States border. Many who decided to leave their country for their family's survival are still searching for answers and relief. 

Many of these immigrants still waiting on permanent protections are those who qualify for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These young immigrants pay nearly $10B in federal, state, and local taxes yearly. Unfortunately, there is no current pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients. A decade after announcing this policy, we still call on Congress to enact comprehensive immigration reform, protecting all immigrants from deportation. 

Immigrants are essential to the GreenLatinos community as we seek our environmental liberation. Without justice and relief for migrants, GreenLatinos will not be able to fully achieve liberación ambiental. 

This month, as we celebrate and honor our incredible immigrant community and graciously thank the current administration for its work to recognize one of this country’s most precious assets, let’s continue to advocate and uplift the contributions of those who remain in the margins searching for justice.

En reconocimiento a la proclamación de la Casa Blanca sobre el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Inmigrante, el presidente fundador y director ejecutivo de GreenLatinos, Mark Magaña, emitió la siguiente declaración:

Mucho antes y desde sus inicios, lo que ahora conocemos como los Estados Unidos, ha sido sinónimo de inmigrantes e inmigración. Como muchos miembros de GreenLatinos saben a través de sus propias experiencias vividas, la migración es fundamental para quienes somos como latinos. Nuestro mundo natural y el reino animal no conocen fronteras. La migración es algo innato y muchas veces necesario para la supervivencia.

Esta proclamación marca junio como el Mes Nacional de la Herencia Inmigrante. Por primera vez en la historia de este país, el gobierno federal honra la herencia, la cultura y las contribuciones de las comunidades inmigrantes a través de una proclamación emitida por la Casa Blanca.

GreenLatinos aplaude esta proclamación, elogia a la Administración Biden por su esfuerzo para resaltar las comunidades de inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos y celebra el tapiz cultural que los inmigrantes traen a este país.

Mientras celebramos este anuncio, también queremos reconocer la trágica realidad que enfrentan muchos inmigrantes en los EE. UU. y en la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos. Muchos de los que decidieron dejar su país por la supervivencia de su familia siguen buscando respuestas y alivio.

Muchos de estos inmigrantes que aún esperan protección permanente son aquellos que califican para el programa de Acción Diferida para los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA). Estos jóvenes inmigrantes pagan casi $10 mil billones en impuestos federales, estatales y locales al año. Desafortunadamente, no existe un camino actual hacia la ciudadanía para los beneficiarios de DACA. Una década después de anunciar esta política, todavía hacemos un llamado al Congreso para que promulgue una reforma migratoria integral, protegiendo a todos los inmigrantes de la deportación.

Los inmigrantes son esenciales para la comunidad de GreenLatinos mientras buscamos nuestra liberación ambiental. Sin justicia y alivio para los migrantes, GreenLatinos no podrá lograr plenamente la liberación ambiental.

Este mes, mientras celebramos y honramos a nuestra increíble comunidad de inmigrantes y gentilmente agradecemos a la administración actual por su trabajo para reconocer uno de los bienes más preciados de este país, sigamos defendiendo y elevando las contribuciones de aquellos que permanecen en los márgenes en busca de justicia.
