Please note that we are hiring 2 different positions for the Energy and Climate team through this one posting. The skill set and responsibilities are the same but the portfolio of the work is different. The positions are:

  • Energy Campaign Representative- 18 month assignment
  • Climate & Public Lands Campaign Representative- Permanent position

The Wilderness Society (TWS) is expanding its Energy & Climate Program, which defends places too wild to drill and works to ensure public lands are managed as part of a solution to climate change. TWS seeks a highly motivated and collaborative individual to join our team in DC to help advocate for and defend policies to reduce the impact coal, oil and gas development has on our wildlands, climate and people.

The Energy and Climate Campaign Representative will assist in developing campaign strategies and tactics, produce education and advocacy materials, and represent TWS in meetings with partners and decision makers. Working with the Communications team and others, the Campaign Representative will develop messaging and materials for various campaigns, oversee execution of tactics that drive coverage consistent with our messages, and translate opportunities to influence national policy to on-the-ground advocacy. Where appropriate, the Campaign Representative will educate the public about our issues as a public spokesperson through media outreach, editorial board meetings, and other communications tactics to build and demonstrate support for our campaign goals. This is a highly collaborative role that involves quick turnaround and attention to detail to help ensure the needs of the campaign are met. Reporting to the Campaign Manager for the Energy and Climate Campaign this position works in an integrated fashion with other TWS staff in communications, regional field offices, government relations, policy and planning experts, and research staff.

This position plays an important role in supporting an inclusive organizational culture that is grounded in trust and accountability to shared goals and outcomes. Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Organize and execute equitable and inclusive priority Too Wild To Drill and fossil fuel emissions reduction campaigns; coordinating across government relations, communications, and the core team to achieve programmatic goals to reduce the impact oil, gas, and coal has on our wildlands and climate.   • Organize and execute equitable and inclusive priority “Climate Plan for Public Lands” campaign, by coordinating across government relations, communications, and the core team to achieve programmatic goals to make public lands part of the climate solution. (Climate & Public Lands Campaign Representative)

Duties for both, Energy Campaign Rep and Climate & Public Lands Rep:

  • Work with government relations and regional staff to engage Members of Congress, including managing lobby trips in D.C. for grasstops advocates and identifying and engaging new and non-traditional advocates.
  • Research and produce advocacy materials and products including but not limited to fact sheets, reports, story maps, issue briefs and web content for multiple audiences, including Congress, TWS members, and the public.
  • Represent TWS in coalitions; ensure effective collaboration and coordination with partners.
  • Support other Energy & Climate programmatic work as needed, including development and implementation of digital product, assisting with events and trainings, etc.


  • 2 to 5years of experience related to advocacy campaigns, policy or communications.
  • Experience working with state, local or national coalitions and engaging diverse partners.
  • Experience using communication and digital campaign tactics, especially running digital, and text message platforms such as Hustle and other tools alike.
  • Ability to successfully manage internal and external collaborative efforts (meetings) with diverse teams from across the country in different time zones.
  • Live the values of equity and inclusion and understand the importance that they play in the environmental movement.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment with many simultaneous moving pieces.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Track record working successfully in teams representing a rich mix of talent, backgrounds, and perspectives—across race and gender. 
  • Strong ability to craft advocacy materials, including digital and social media pieces.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
