Texas Field Consultant, Moms Clean Air Force

Moms Clean Air Force is working in Texas  – primarily focused in the San Antonio area – in partnership with GreenLatinos, a national non-profit organization that convenes a broad coalition of Latino leaders committed to addressing national, regional and local environmental, natural resources and conservation issues that significantly affect the health and welfare of the Latino community in the United States.

Moms Clean Air Force is seeking a highly motivated individual to work in San Antonio, who is dedicated to building a program to engage local and statewide Latinas and families in the Moms Clean Air Force/GreenLatinos Madre Tierra Program on issues of clean air and climate change specifically related to air emissions from oil and gas activities.

This part-time contract position will be dedicated to executing an issue-based campaign in order to:

Develop strong coalition of partners and supermoms in the San Antonio area to support and grow Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos’ missions in Texas.

  • Cultivate a diverse group of advocates and stakeholders in San Antonio to grow Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos’ capacity in the state and build public and political support to address climate change and regional solutions to ground level  ozone reductions including emission reductions from Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas operations
  • Engage and represent Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos within campaign and coalition groups to support local and federal programs and policy priorities
  • Work with, and develop, Latina/o leaders in San Antonio/South Texas to serve as message champions for air quality improvements and climate action both in San Antonio and the Eagle Ford Shale

Lead visits with local, state and federal elected leaders and their staff and advocate on policy priorities

  • Stay apprised of local, state, and national policy and industry developments that affect Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos work
  • Mobilize Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos supermoms and other members to communicate and engage with elected officials and other decision makers in San Antonio and Texas on climate change, air quality, and oil and gas issues
  • Organize individual advocacy meetings and events to bring visibility to policy priorities at the local and federal level
  • Organize supporters to attend and testify at hearings and workshops related to Texas air quality issues
  • Organize health professionals to speak to the adverse impacts of poor air quality on the local community’s health

Participate in local governmental activities and initiatives to support Moms Clean Air Force’s and GreenLatinos’ policy priorities

  • Engage and testify at public hearings and workshops related to San Antonio/South Texas regional air quality issues
    • Organize supporters to attend and testify at hearings and workshops
    • Examples include: Alamo Area Council of Governments, City Council, Rail Road Commission, and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality meetings
  • Contribute to the development of and build support for a local climate action and adaptation plan that works toward the goals of Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos
  • Apply to serve on local advisory boards and/or committees that provide targeted opportunities to educate the public on and advise local agencies and/or government entities on Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos policy priorities
  • Support the use of a large network of low-cost air quality monitors throughout the region

Plan and execute meetings and grassroots events in San Antonio area to educate, build relationships and create visibility for Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos in Texas.

  • Engage Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos membership through online platforms including action alerts, emails, social media and through grassroots campaign tactics including phone banking and canvassing
  • Cultivate and educate Supermoms throughout Texas to build diverse constituencies of support for policy priorities

Educate and present at public meetings, events, town halls, schools and parenting events. Increase the visibility of Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos on climate change and air quality issues in San Antonio and Texas through media

  • Coordinate with communications staff to place opinion pieces and letters to the editor in local papers
  • Identify local parent voices to amplify Moms Clean Air Force’s and GreenLatinos’ message in media
  • Identify earned media opportunities in family-centric print, TV, radio, and online platforms
  • Organize press events in rapid response to key policy issues
  • Build relationship with local media and provide quotes and speaking opportunities to media
  • Maintain a Texas-specific webpage and social media platforms that highlight relevant issues and highlights Moms Clean Air Force and GreenLatinos work in the field.
  • Coordinate with team to create and maintain bilingual fact sheets, website, materials, and social media platforms

Work with, and hold accountable, energy utilities and natural gas operators and suppliers to support policy priorities

  • Advise and Promote the use of advanced technologies and best practices to reduce methane leaks and emissions throughout the supply chain
  • Inform and advocate for participation in forward- thinking initiatives regarding nonfinancial-based performance indicators in the natural gas market
  • Promote objectivity and transparency in reporting natural gas leaks and marketing of natural gas

Provide periodic reports through weekly conference calls, monthly and quarterly written reports and other communications as needed.

Qualifications include:

  • Strong commitment to clean air and climate change solutions
  • General understanding of Texas environmental issues and politics
  • Self-motivated, innovative, with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work well under pressure with both grassroots and grass-tops volunteers and staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with constituents, elected officials and allies
  • Familiarity working with online advocacy tools, website, and social media
  • Minimum 2 years of political and field experience preferred
  • Well organized, detail oriented, goal driven and able to prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a positive, timely manner in a fast-paced environment
  • Some nights and weekends required
  • Must have access to a vehicle
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish)
  • **training will be provided on oil & gas issues for otherwise qualified candidates
