GreenLatinos Statement on Omnibus Appropriations Bill

Washington, D.C. -- Congress has introduced an omnibus government spending bill for the remainder of FY2018. In response, GreenLatinos Founding President & CEO, Mark Magaña released the following statement:

"GreenLatinos is relieved to see Congress reign in President Trump’s proposed budget that would have led to devastating environmental and public health impacts by cutting and practically eliminating, programs that protect our land, water, and air quality.

Although this bill maintains most environmental protections for our communities; there is room for improvement. Through this process we continued to see Republican introduction of environmental poison pill riders that look to override the best interest of the public in favor of corporate bottom lines. One of these poison pills, the development of a border wall, has not only received push back from numerous environmental and immigration groups, but from border communities that have outlined the negative impacts the wall would have on their communities. Although the bill appropriates limited border wall funding, it does prohibit the construction of a physical barrier along the Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge that would have had detrimental consequences for that habitat. We need to insure that our border communities are protected as well.

It is however, very disappointing that the omnibus proposal does not provide a desperately needed solution for our DREAMER and immigrant community.  A problem that this President created.

GreenLatinos is committed to pushing for stronger environmental and conservation protections for all Americans and continue to work alongside our DREAMER community towards a fair immigration solution."
