TAKE ACTION: Defend Mercury and Air Toxics Standards

The Trump Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler have proposed to rollback the EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, which have been in place since 2011, to control mercury emissions from power plants. These commonsense safeguards were designed to limit pollution and help protect communities from other harmful toxics.

Acting Administrator Wheeler’s attempt to weaken these protections and create loopholes for polluters is a blatant giveaway to oil and gas interests at the expense of our community's health and well-being.

Speak out now to stop these reckless attacks. Use your voice on social media and take action by signing the petition

Dear EPA Acting Administrator Wheeler:

I am writing today in opposition to repealing current Mercury and Air Toxics Standards. These protections keep a terrible poison from harming the American people. It is unacceptable to gamble with our children's health for the benefit of industry polluters.

Mercury, lead, and arsenic are some of the most dangerous toxins and forms of pollution. Current mercury and toxics standards are common sense regulations that curb the impact and reduce levels of exposure and contamination. Latino communities in particular, are disproportionately impacted by higher levels of toxins in air and water. Additionally, nearly 2 million Latinos live within a half mile of an oil and gas facility.

It is the EPA’s obligation to protect all Americans from harmful mercury pollution. Any attempt to weaken or dismantle standards that cut pollution from the oil and a gas industry, is a direct assault on our health and environment – and the Environmental Protection Agency should not be complicit.

On behalf of GreenLatinos, we urge the federal government to maintain current Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, whose commonsense safeguards were designed to limit the release of pollution, and help protect communities from harmful pollutants.

Sincerely,

Will you sign?

    Dear Secretary Wheeler,

I am at a loss to comprehend why the EPA is taking steps that will degrade public health. Do you have children? Grandchildren? I do. Rich or poor, they will be adversely affected by the increased level of mercury in the environment that will follow the rescission of the current mercury rule. Don’t do it!
