GreenLatinos Supports Green “Justice” New Deal Resolution;
Increasing Justice for Frontline Communities Essential as Congressional Action Advances

Today, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey introduced joint Green New Deal resolutions and unveiled a bold plan to combat climate change and inequality. While the proposed resolutions include many positive initiatives that will move the United States towards clean and renewable energy sources, encourage innovation, and help curb carbon emission pollution, history teaches us that justice is required for this grand proposal to be successful.

GreenLatinos President & CEO Mark Magaña released the following statement:

“GreenLatinos supports a Green “Justice” New Deal based on the resolutions introduced today by Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Ed Markey. It is encouraging to witness Members of Congress lifting up climate change discussions and addressing the climate crisis around the globe. We see the Green New Deal resolution as a crucial first step in establishing necessary regulations to curb the impacts of carbon emissions, increase justice, and reduce inequality in the United States and around the world and we will keep a watchful eye on the degree to which equity and justice are central tenets as this legislative process progresses.

Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez said, “The heart of the Green New Deal is about social justice.” We agree. With no justice, there can be no Green New Deal.

People of color, low income people, and women, are disproportionately impacted by fossil fuel pollution and are on the frontlines of climate change impacts, as witnessed by extreme weather disasters in Puerto Rico, California, Florida, Texas, and beyond. GreenLatinos is committed to continuing to stand by the concerns of our communities as we overcome structural obstacles to ensure we all benefit from the solution, are fully and fairly engaged in every step of this process, and are not marginalized and excluded from discussions or results. This means that at its core we need a Green “Justice” New Deal, built from the ground up, that prioritizes the needs of frontline communities.

GreenLatinos looks forward to engaging Members of Congress to ensure that legislative, administrative, state and local, and international measures protect Mother Earth and her people, are impactful on climate action, are driven by frontline communities, and address the need to end fossil fuel extraction.”
